To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DE KALB TURBEVILLE a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guide Attachments for Carpenters Planes, of which the following is a specification.

In squaring or beveling a face or edge of a piece of lumber with a carpenters plane it is the usual practice for the workman to depend entirely upon his skill in maintaining the plane at the proper level to secure the desired result, and to use a bevel or trysquare in determining the correctness of the surface obtained.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient device which may be readily applied or attached to a carpenters plane now in general use, with a View to assisting such workman in squaring or beveling the edge of a piece of lumber without relying entirely upon his own skill in manipulating the plane and which will. dispense with the use of the ordinary bevel or try-square in such operations.

In order to more fully describe my said invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows in perspective one form of my improved device attached to a carpenters plane and represented in the act of squaring the edge of a piece of lumber; Fig. 2 a perspective view of one of the members of said attachment; Fig. 3 a perspective view of another member of said attachment; and Fig. 4 a perspective view of the clamp used for securing said attachment to the plane.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a carpenters plane of well known construction, and 2 represents a piece of lumber on one edge of which the working face of the plane 1 rests in the act of squaring the same.

My improved attachment consists, in the case shown, of a forked guide comprising, among other parts, an arm 3 having an offset extension 4, preferably rectangular in cross section or having a fiat inside face, adapted to engage one face or edge of the Work, and a second arm 5 having a right angle offset 6, which is adapted to engage an opposite edge or face of the work. The latter arm extends substantially at right angles to the arm 3 and through an opening 7, in the head of the offset 4, with which opening the said arm 5 makes a slidingfit so as to permit of the adjustment of the member 6 with relation to its distance from the member 4 to accommodate different widths of material. The arm 5 is rigidly clamped in the opening 7 by means of a set screw 8.

The guide is adjustably attached to the plane in the case shown by means of a clamp 9, binding the arm 3 in the angle between a vertical side 10 and top 11 of the plane. By loosening set screw 12 of this clamp, the arm 3 may be turned on its longitudinal axis to vary the angle which the guide members 4 'and 6 make with the working face of the plane in a direction at right angles thereto, so as to set the guide for beveling the edge of the lumber to any desired angle.

It will readily be seen that with a device of this kind a workman does not have to depend upon his skill to maintain the plane square with the lumber, or at the proper angle, to secure a square or bevel surface as the case may be. The guide members 4: and 6, engaging opposite faces of the lumber and set to the proper angle, insure the proper manipulation of the plane to secure the desired result. It will be seen, moreover, that the device here shown and described is extremely simple and, therefore, of low cost to manufacture. It will also be understood that various modifications of the specific form of device herein shown may be made without departing from the true spirit of the invention, but

What I claim is:

1. The combination with a carpenters plane, of a guide attachment therefor comprising an arm having two forked members adapted to engage opposite faces of the work, and means to secure said arm to said plane to permit of its adjustment whereby the angle which the said forked members make with the working face of the plane may be varied in a direction transversely of said working face.

2. The combination with a carpenters plane, of a guide attachment therefor comprising an arm having an offset extension adapted to engage anedge or face of the work, a second arm extending transversely of the first and having an offset extension adapted to engage another edge or face of the work, the said ofiset portions extending downward transversely to the working face of the plane, the two said extensions being adjustable to vary the distance between them to accommodate different widths of work; clamping means to hold said arms a fixed distance apart, and clamping means to secure the first of said arms to the plane to permit of its adjustment whereby the angle which said extensions make with the working face of the plane transversely thereof may be Varied.
