TUBE-CLAMR To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM E. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owosso, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube- Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clamps used for securing patches to the air tubes of wheel tires; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a clamp constructed accordin to this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view o the clamp, showing one of its plates in sectionon the line .frm in Fi l.
The clamp 1s formed of two o posed plates 2 and B. The plate 2, which isllonge'r than the plate 3, has a pair of lugs 4 at one end portion, and a shorter pair of lugs 5 at its other end portion.
The plate 3 has a tongue 6 at one end which projects in the s ace between the air of lugs 4. At the ot er end of the p ate 8 a tongue 7 is provided which projects in the space between the pair of lugs 5 and which has a series of grooved steps 8 onvits upper side. The plate 3 is movable lon itudinally upon the plateQ, and 10 is a pm which is passed through vholes inthe pair of lugs 5 and which engages with one of the grooved steps. The grooves are made in the form of steps, so as to vary the thickness of the tongue, and thereby enable the same y Specication of Letters Patent.

clamp to be used for tubes of diierent thickness of material.
An eccentric or cani 14 is pivoted to the pair of lugs 4 by a pin l5. and is arranged over the tongue A long handle 16 projects from the eccentric 14. lVhen a patch is to be cemented over a puncture in the air tube 8 of a vehicle tire, the tube together with the patch piece and some suitable cement between them is compressed between the two plates, as shown in Fig. 2, and the patch piece is held to the tube over the puncture until the cement has hardened. The handle is moved to apply the clamp, and the eccentric is turned to a osition from which it cannot slip and in which it is held by frictional contact with the tongue.
What I claim is:
In a tube clamp, the combination, with a flat plate of rigid material having two pairs of lugs of unequal height which project. upwardly from the opposite end portions of its u per surface, of a longitudinally adjusta le fiat late of rigid material having tongues at its ends which project longitudinally between the said pairs of lugs` one of the said tongues having a series of grooves stepped in relation to its under face, a in carried b the short lugs and engaging with the sai grooves and holding the grooved tongue in lace, and an eccentric pivoted to the long` ugs and bearing on the other tongue.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. PAYNE.
