ot' the city. county. and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Irnprovements in Door-Latches, of which the Y reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forining a part thereof.
My invention relates to means for locking doors, windows' or similar devices which are arranged in pairs.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and compact means of the aforesaid character that shall be particularly applicable to double doors .and shall hold one of the doors in closed position and lock it in its closed position when the other door is closed.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is an elevation of a door frame and double doors equipped with the lock of-my invention, certain of the parts being broken away View o'n a larger scale, of a portion of the slightly. Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2 with the doors closed and the pins, which form parts of the lock at the topof the door, shown i'n cross section. Fig. 4 is of the door frame at right angles to Fig. 1. Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings, the structure here shown comprises a' door frame or cabinet having a base 10, side members 11 1and 12, atop having a front strip 13, a pair of` doors 15 and 16 which are respectively swung from the side members 11 and 1Q by hinges 17 and 18 and locks 1!) at the top and base, only the top one being shown in Fig. 1. The door 16 may be provided with a strip 2() which overlaps the adjacent edge of the door 15. Each of the locks 19 com prises a plate 30 to which a pawl 31 is pivotally secured by a pin 32, and cams '33 and 54. The plate 30 fitted into a recess either in the base 10 or the front strip 13 as the case may be and the pawl 31 is located under the plate in the recess .and is provided with outwardly projecting pins 35 and 36 which extend through slots 37 and. 38 inthe The arrangement of parts is'such tlrarLwhen the plate 1s mountcdin position Specification of Letters'latent.

The camsl 33 aud 31 are respectively elnbedded in the edges of the doors 15 and 16 and are adapted to cooperate with the pins 35 and 36 as hereinafter pointed out. The cam 33 consists of a small plate having notches L10 and 41 and an intermediate tongue '112. The outline of the notch 41 and the adjacent surface of the tongue form a reverse curve while the surface of the tonguel adjacent to the notch 4() is a straight line, which forms an acute angle withV the plane of the door.4 The cam 8-'1 consists ot a plate which is provided with a single notch 45. j
The slots 37 and 38 in the plate 30 permit a limited rotative adjustment of the pawl 31 about the pin 32 as an axis.
The operation of the lock is as follows: Assuming that the doors are open and the pawl occupies the position in which it is illustrated in Fig. 2, if the door 15 is swung closed the straight surface 4:6 of the tongue i 42 will engage the pin and will swing the pawl 31 into its opposite position, the pin 3G riding over the reverse curved surface L17 into the notch 41. It' the pawl does not happen to be intheposition in which it is shown in Fig. 3 when the door 15 is swung against it. the inner portion of the reverse curve 47 will strike against the pin 3G to torce it over to the right and bring the parts into proper position t'or the straight. edge 4G to engage pin-3f. The pin projections ot' the' pawl limit theI inward swing of the door 15 and hold it in its closed position. lint this is not a positive hold because. the outer 'portion oi the reverse curve 47 is so shaped as to force the pin :di over to the. right when a sutlicient outward pull is exerted upon the door 15. lt however, the door 1G is closed, the pin 3G falls into the notch 45, which is relatively shallow thereby holding the door 16 in the closed position without locking it and positively locking the door 16 closed since the notch -ll is relatively deep. 'lhe parts now :occupy the position shown in Fig.V 3 and it is only necessary to lock the door 1G to the door 15` in any well known manner such as an ordinary bolt lock in order to lock both ot' the doors securely in vtheir closed positions.
