Specification of Letters Patgnt.
v APPARATUS FOR UTILIZING COKE-OVEN HEAT.
Application filed April 26, 1909, Serial No. 492,133. Renewed December 2, 1909. Serial No. 531,068.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND C. MORGAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Apparatus for Utilizing Coke-Oven Heat, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement in apparatus for utilizing coke oven heat and theobject of lily-improvement is to ut1liae the heat which now goes to waste in the manufacture of coke in beehive'and other types of ovens producing cokeby the same process as the beehive type of oven. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of
Figure- 1 is a side view, partly in section, of the apparatus, and also shows a vertical section of a beehive coke oven Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Mounted above the oven and secured at one of its ends to the oven wall and at its other end to the track rail (11), in a suitable manner, isv the frame (12) arranged so that the opening in the trunnel head (40) of the oven is directly under the opening in the frame (12). Mounted on the frame (12) and securely attached thereto by means of rivets, or other suitable means, are the standards (13) having grooves ,or yolres formedfin their free ends adapted to carry the steam pipe'-(11). (lounected at right angles to the steam pipe (1 1) is the short pipe (15), Fig. 2, the passageway in which connects with the passageway in the steam pipe (14:). The passageway in the short pipe (I -5) may be closed by means of the valve (16'). Mounted on the projection (20) on the frame (12), in a suitable manncr, is the Water pipe (21). Connected at right angles to the water pipe (21) is the short pipe (22), Fig. 1, the passageway 1n which connects with the passageway in the water pipe (21). The passageway in the short pipe (22) may be closed by means of the valve (23). I
Mounted for horizontal movement on the frame (12), by means of wheels (17), is the steam, generator (lt8), the wheels (17) being loosely mounted on the short axles ('19) which are flanged one end and se axles curely riveted to'the steam generator (18). The steam generator represented in the accompanying drawings, in the main is of the usual construction oi a vertical tubular boiler and is connected to the short pipes (15) and (22) by means of the pipes (24:)
and (25) respectively and their flexible connections (26) and (27). The passageways in thepipes (2 1) and (25) and their flexible connections (26) and (27) connect with the. passageways in the short pipes (15) and (22) respectively thus forming continuous passageways from the steam generator (18 to the passageways in the steam pipe (1 1; and the water pipe (21). The pipes (25) and the short pipes (22) are designed to convey .Water from the water pipe (21) to the steam generator (1.8) and the pipes (24?) and the short pipe (15) are designedto convey the steam from the steam generator (18) to the steam pipe (14).. The steam generator being movably mounted on the frame (12) as described is arranged so that at one point in its movementon the frame (12) it wilLstand centrally over the open ing in the trunnel head (40) of the coke oven so that the heat from the oven will pass up through the flues in the steam generator (18), and at another point in the movement of the steam generator (18') on the frame (12-) it will be entirely clear of the trunnel head 10) of the coke oven so that the charging of the oven may be carried on the same as heretofore.
Attached at one end to one of the axles (19) by means of an eyebolt (28), or other suitable means, is a rope or chain (29). From this point the rope (29) is carried around sheave wheel (30) which is loosely mounted on the projection on the frame (12) by means oft-he -pin From this point the rope is carried back around sheave wheel (33) which is loosely mounted on the projection (3d) on the frame (12) by means of the pin (35). Therope (.219) is then allowed to extend downwardly in-Lfront of the oven a sufiicient distance to be within easy-reach of the operator standing on the ground or floor in front of the coke oven and is formed into a loop by having its op- Patented lllla.i'.d,1913.
posits and carried around sheave wheel (36), which is loosely mounted on the projection (37') on the frame, (12) by means of the pin (38), and attached to one of the ('19) by means oi an evebolt ('39). or
.i to
other suitable means, as clearly shown in .the drawings. The operator, by pulling on the top of the coke oven, leaving the .oven
entirelyclear to be charged in the usual Way. After the oven has been charged the operator, by pulling on the rope (29) at the point indicated by (B), can move the steam generator (18) back into position direetly over the trunnel head l-O) in the top of the coke oven so that the tines in the steam generator and the opening in the trunnel head (40) will form a continuous tlue from the inside of the coke oven to the top of the steam generator;
By the construction shown. the steam generated by the heat from the coke oven can be garried to any point desired by means of the steam pipe (14).
Having now explained the principles of my invention and a form of appartus embodying the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a colge even, of a frame mounted above said coke oven and extending across the same, and a vertical draft steam generator adapted to receive the heat coming from the trunnel head of the coke oven, mounted on said frame and arranged for horizontal movement thereon.
2. The combination with a coke oven, of a steam generator, a truck for carrying said generator over said oven or away from the same, fixed water supply and steam supply pipes, and flexible water tight and steam. tight connections between the said fixed pipes and generator to permit free movement-of the latter without leakage.
3. The combination of a coke oven, a frame mounted above said coke oven, a vertical flue steam generator, adapted toreceive the heat coming from the trunnel head 01 the coke oven. mounted on said frame and arranged for horizontal movement thereon,
and a mechanism for moving the steam generator on said frame.
4:. In an apparatus for utilizing coke oven heat, the combination of a coke oven, a frame mounted above said coke oven and extending acrossthe same, a vertical draft steam generator, adapted to receive the heat coming from the trunnel head of the coke oven, mounted on said frame and arranged for horizontal movement thereon, a Water supply. pipe, a flexible communicating connection between said water supply pipe and said steam generator, a steam pipe. and a flexible communicating connection between said steam pipe and said steam generator.
5. In an apparatus for utilizing coke oven heat, the combination of a c ke oven, a frame mounted above said coke oven and extending across the same, a steam generator,v
- ried in said frame, a flexible communicating connection between said water supply pipe and said steam generator, a steam pipe carried in said frame and a flexible communieating connection between said steam pipe and said steam generator.
6. In apparatus for utilizing coke oven heat, the combination with a vertical line steam generator, of a straight track extending entirely across the oven, and means for moving said generator in said track over the opening in the top of the oven to receive the heat therefrom, or for moving it entirely clear of the opening in the top of the oven.

In apparatus for utilizing coke oven heat. the combination with a steam generator. of a track extending over said oven across the upper opening therein. a truck on said track for carrying said generator, and means for moving said truck and enerator on said track over the opening and away from the same. from a position in front. of. the coke oven.
8. In apparatus for utilizing coke oven heat,- the combination with a steam generator. of a track, a truck on said track and carrying said generator. :1 fixed watensupplv pine and a fixed steam pipe. flexible st cam tight and water tight connections between said pines and said generator. and means manually operable from in front of the oven for moving the enerator from a position over the trunnel head to a position 'en irelv clear of the same.
9. In apparatus for utilizing coke oven heat. the combination with a steam generator. of a wheeled tru'ek carrying the same, a track extending over a coke oven. and flexible means operable from in front of the oven to ino've said truck and generator over the trunnel head of the oven or away from the same.
