SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 588,351, dated August 17, 189
Application filed Octobell 1396- v To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State ofNVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke Stacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertalns to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means for conveying the smoke and products of combustion from a locomotive to the rear of a train.
It has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap smoke-stack or pipe for this purpose which can be readily applied to the tops of the coaches and the adjacent ends of the pipes having a pneumatic coupling or union which will allow of the necessary oscillation of the cars and yet provide a smoketight joint. The top of the smoke stack proper is provided with a movable gate or cover under the control of the engineer, so that it may be opened when necessary.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention in this instance resides in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, andthen particularly pointed out in the claims. v
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a detail side elevation showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in proximity to the smokestack proper. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through the joint between the adjacent ends of two pipes.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A- designates the smoke-stack Serial No. 668,729. (No model.)
of a locomotive of usual construction, except that atits upper end it is provided with the rectangular box B, which may be open at the front end, if desired, and to its rear end is connected the pipe 0, that extends rearward, being supported above the tender in any suitable manner and also over the tops of the coaches, there being as many of these pipes as there are coaches, besides the one connected with the said box and extended over the tender.
The joints or unions between the adjacent ends of the pipes are form ed as follows: E are rings secured to the ends of the pipes and provided each with an annular flange e, and to each of the flan ges, outside the line of the pipe, is secured a pneumatic tube F, as shown, each being in the form of a ring, and these act as cushions and press one against the other with force enough to make a practically air and smoke tight union of the ends of the pipes and yet allow of the oscillation of the cars, at the same time forming practically an automatic coupling or union.
The top of the box B has ahinged cover G, as shown, and to the same is connected a rod H, which is connected to the cord I, that extends to the engineers cab, so that this cover is at'all times under his control.
Modifications in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
The pneumatic rings may sometimes be provided with a covering of some non-combustisubstantially as described.
2. The combination with two sections of a pipe, of rings secured to the adjacent ends thereof and provided each with an annular flange, and pneumatic tubes in the form of rings secured to said flanges outside the peripheries of said pipes, said pneumatic rings arranged with their adjacent faces in contact, and a non-combustible covering for said rings, substantially as described.
