Description

(Model.)
J. TRAMMELL & A-. H. SLAUGHTER. 4
SPARK ARRESTER.
Patented Mar. 7,1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. TRAMMELL AND ALFRED H. SLAUGHTER, OF OPELIKA, ALA.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,730, dated March '7, I882.
' Applicationfiled July 19, 1881. (Modehl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. TRAMMELL and ALFRED H. SLAUGHTER, of Opelika, in the county of Lee, and in the State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, and to the letters of. reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in spark-arresters for locomotives; and it has for its objects to provide an improved means for diverting the sparks, smoke, and cinders from their usual course out of the smokestack or funnel and discharging them at the rear of the locomotive or train. These objects we attain by the apparatus and devices illus- 'funnel or smoke-stack. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the funnel with the top removed.
Fig. 4 represents a view of the top of the fun-- nel or stack detached, and Fig. 5 represents a detached view of a section of the pipe and one of the air-funnels.
The letter A indicates the locomotive, and B the smoke-stack or funnel. The said funnel is provided on the inside of the enlarged upper portion with a deflector, 0, between which and the outer wall of the funnel is an annular flue, D, for the escape of the smoke, cinders, and sparks.
The letter F indicates a segmental deflector, formingaportion of thefront wallof the smokestack or funnel, and G a rear deflector, a space, H,at each side.beingleft between the two for the en trance of air. From said deflector G extends backward a tube, I, mounted on suitable supports attached to the locomotive. The said tube, at suitable intervals, is provided with reversely-set air-funnels K, and is perforated, as indicated by the letter L, whereby a current of air may be taken into the pipe as the locomotive moves in eitherdirection. Similar tubes are located on the cars, and are connected by means of flexible tubes of suitable construction.
The letter M indicates the top of the smokestack or funnel, which is provided with an opening, N, for the escape of smoke, and a sliding valve, 0, by means of which the escape of smoke may be regulated or caused to pass backward through the tube. The said valve connects with a lever, P, provided with a rod, R, extending back into the cab, so that the engineer may operate the valve.
The operation of our invention will be apparent. The valve being closed, or partially closed, the smoke, cinders, and sparks are diverted and passed back into the tube and are carried by the draft of air through the same out of the rear.
Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
.1. In combination with the smoke-stack,provided with asuitable top and valve, theinner, forward, and rear deflectors, adapted to operate substantially in the manner specified.
2. In combination with the smoke-stack and deflectors, constructed as shown and described, the tube extending to the rear and provided with reversely-set air-funnels and apertures for the admission of air, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses, this 4th day of July, 1881.
JOHN W. TRAMMELL.
. A. H. SLAUGHTER.
