` Letters Patent N 105,463, dated July 19, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT MACHINES FOR `El'I-KIiNl'Gl' PRINTERS LEADS,
The Sehonlsrefened to intresse4 Letters Patent and making part o! the same.
To all whom it may concern:
f Be it known that I, KARLM. KLEES, of the city of N ew York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a newr and improvedMaehine for Making Printers Leads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenable others skilled in tbe art to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. I
Figurel represent-sa "ertical longitudinal section of my improved machine.

The object of this invention is to 'construct aina-- site form. The invention consists, also, in t/he'application Atothe said rollers of a peculiar hopper, which hasjas* many discharge openingsfandslides as there are" grooves for tbeiormation of different strips of metal.
A, in the drawing, represents the frame of my Ina- Itis made of wood or other .snitable'mate rial, of suitable size-and form, strong'encngh'lbr Tall practical purposes; 4
In the frame are hung two transverse horizonteI shafts, B and C, carrying drums or rollers D and E,
-respectively. The shaftsB C are hollow, and so are the drums they carry, so hat .water may-be forced into them to` keepthem rom becoming overheated byfriction. The edgesof the drums are close together, and are, respectively, grooved and ribbed, the
ribs of .one fitting intothe grooves of fthe other.
Above therollers D E is arranged a hopperf-lih;
'lhis hopper contains, at or near its lower end, as
Similar letters 'of' reference indicate coirespondingr'f .heatedbythe-eillin the' chambers e.
`be contained.
Under the drums D E is hung, inthe-flame A,
a. pair-of rollers, G G, which carries cutters fg, for reducing the-length of strip coming from said` rollers.
Thehopperis preferably secured to a pivoted frame, H,so that .it-can be swung clear. of the rollers, for permitting'inspection,cleaning, repairing, 85o.
'lheoperation sj as-follows:
' "lhe metabtolbensed for'the leads is, in a liquid or semi-liquid 'state, put into 'the hopper, and isv kept It is gradually fedfont into thegrooves of the wheel E, in which the ,ribsof D press it into strips of the requisite-width andthickncss,
H herollersQDE are-keptcool bythe water passing lthrough' the1n,`and` wiil, therefore, not be overheated by the hotmeta'l.
The strips' issue fromv thc rollers in acontinuonscourse, and are, by the, knives.: f g1, cnt-into leads of proper length.
Rotary motion is iinportdiothe-rollels by suitable mechanism.;
Having thus described my invention', I claim: asnew `and desirefto secure by Letters Patent-f 1. The rolls .D E, hollowribbed, and groovenh as shown and described, combined with a/vessel' having slides l and apertures a', to supply the plastic metal thereto.
'2. The hollow, ribbed, and grooved rolls D E, and the rotary cutters f g G G, all relatively arranged as set forth, combined with a suitable vessel to supply the plastic metal thereto.
- KARL M. KLEES.
