To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM I). Nmns, citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EXtQllSlOll-TillfdQS, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in tables, and more particularly to tables of the extension type.

In restaurants and similar places ordinary conditions demand the use of relatively small individual tables but upon occasions it is necessary to provide exceptionally long narrow tables for the purpose of banquets and the like, and it has been the general practice heretofore to especially construct such tables whenever the occasion demanded.

One of the objects of the present invention is the provision of an extension table which is so constructed that it may be. when desired, extended to a considerable length to provide a table of this character.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an extension table which is provided with a supplemental top which is adapted to overlie the ordinary topsections of the table when the same are in their con tracted position and which can be used in conjunction with the top sections when the same are in their extended positions to increase the length of the table.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter when read in connection with the accompanying drawingsforminga part hereof, wherein a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated, and wherein like characters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved table with the parts in their extended positions, and with the supplemental top removed; Fig. 1 is a detail sectional View of one end of one of the sect-ions of the supplemental top showing the construction of one of the hooked members which are utilized to secure the supplemental top in position; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the table in its contracted position with the supplemental top secured thereon; Fig. 4 is a top view of the table in its extended position; Fig. 5 is a cross section through one of the end frames of the table, and Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the table, parts being broken away, of the parts in their contracted positions.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings. the table comprises end frames A and B each of which are provided with suppm'ting legs of any desired construction, said end frames comprising side bars which are connected by suitable cross pieces positioned adjacent the ends thereof. The end frames A and B of the table are slidably connected so that they may be adjusted toward and away from each other and to this end, the side bars of said end frames are provided with longitudinally extending guide-ways C therein in which are slidably mounted longitudinally extending slide bars D D. The slide bars I) D are rigidly connected intermediate the ends thereof by means of a supporting member E, the upper surface of which is positioned in the same plane as the upper surfaces of the end frames, said supporting member being of a length that it will fit between the side bars of the supporting frames when the same are brought together. To limit the movementof the end frames A and B away from each other, the slide bars I) are provided with suitable projections (Z which are adapted to cooperate with the suitable stops d carried by the end frames when the end frames have been moved outwardly to their full extent.

The end sections A and B of the table are provided with suitable main top sections F and G, said top sections being connected to their respective end frames by means permitting the top sections to be slid longitudinally of said frames. Any suitable means may be employed for so connecting the top sections to the end frames. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, I have shown the end frames as provided with guide-rails H II extending alongside of the side bars of said end frames and spaced therefrom, and the main top sections as resting upon the upper surface of the ends frames A and B and being provided along the edges thereof with upwardly extending guide rails H which are adapted to fit between the guide rails H H and the adjacent portions of the end frames. To afford the proper support to the main top sections F and G, when the same are moved outwardly on their respective end frames, each of said top sections has secured adjacent the outer end thereof, a longitudinally extending bar I which slidably engages suitable openings formed in the cross pieces which connect the side bars of the end frames A and B, and to limit the outward movement of the top sections on their end frames, each of said slide bars is provided with an enlargement at its free end which is adapted to contact with the inner cross piece of the end frame when the main top section has been moved outwardly its full extent. The end frames A and B are provided with suitable cross pieces K which are flush with the upper surface thereof and which are provided with suitable openings therein which are adapted to be exposed when the top sections have been moved outwardly to their full extent on their respective frames.

The top of the table as thus far described is, when the main top sections are brought together, oblong in shape, and while the table may be used in this form if desired, I have provided a supplemental top for the table for converting the same to a square or substantially square table, which top is of such a construction that it may be used in combination with the main top sections F and G when the table is extended to provide a tablehaving an elongated narrow top. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the supplemental top comprises two similarly formed sections L and L which are equal in length to the length of the table when the main top sections thereof are brought together. The supplemental top sections are L-shaped, being each provided with a wide portion Z and a narrow portion Z, the wide portions Z being equal in width to the width of the main top sections F and G of the table and the narrow portions Z being one-half the width of the wide portions Z. The wide and narrow portions of the supplemental top sections are equal in length. When the table is in its contracted position, the supplemental top sections L and L rest directly upon the main top sections F and G, such supplemental top sections being oppositely disposed with the wide part Z of each section directly abutting the narrow part of the adjacent section, as is shown in Fig. 3, thus forming a top, the sides of which project laterally beyond the sides of the main table top. To look the sections of the supplemental top in this position, said sections are provided at the ends thereof with hooked members Z which depend therefrom and are adapted to overlie the ends of the main top sections F and G. After the supplemental top has been posi tioned in the manner above described, the main top sections F and G are separated slightly to cause the ends thereof to enter the hooked members depending from the ends of the supplemental top sections and thus lock the same in position. Any suitable means may be employed for separating the main top sections to accomplish this result. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated I have shown one of the top sections provided adjacent the outer end thereof on its underside with a plurality of turnbut-tons M M having rounded free ends which are adapted to be moved into engage ment with a fixed portion of the end frame which will cause the top section to which they are attached to be moved outwardly on said end frame a suflicient distance to effect the locking of the supplemental top sections in the manner theretofo-re described.

To convert the table into an extended narrow table of a form suitable for banquets and the like, the turn-buttons M M are manipulated to permit the main top section to which they are attached to be moved in wardly a sufficient distance to permit the disengagement of the supplemental top sections L and L. The end frames A and B of the table are then extended to their full length and the main top sections F and G are also extended to their full length on their respective end frames; the supplemental top sections are then placed end to end between the main top sections thus separated, with the narrow portions Z Z in contact with each other, as is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. hen the supplemental top sections are secured in this position the wide portions Z Z rest upon the cross pieces K heretofore referred to and the hooked members Z depending from the ends of said supplemental top sections enter the openings 7:; in said cross pieces and thus hold the supplemental top sections in position between the main top sections F and G. The narrow portions Z Z of the supplemental top sections L and L are in this position of the table, supported by the intermediate support E which connects the slide bars D D.

IVhile a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that many changes may be made to the particular form and construction shown therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim 1. In an extension table, top sections, one of which is adjustable relatively to the other, a supplemental top adapted to overlie said top sections, said supplemental top being provided with downwardly hooked members adapted to overlie the edges of the top sections, and means for spreading the top sections to cause the edges thereof to engage the hooked members depending from the supplemental top.

2. In an extension table, top sections, one of which is adjustable relatively to the other, a supplemental top adapted to overlie said top sections, said supplemental top being provided with downwardly hooked members adapted to overlie the edges of the top sections, and means for spreading the top sections to cause the edges thereof to engage the hooked members depending from the supplemental top, said means comprising a movable member secured to the underside of one of said top sections and adapted to cooperate with a relatively fixed portion of the table.

3. In an extension table, end frames slidably connected to each other, main top sections carried by said end frames, a supplemental top adapted to overlie said main top sections when the same are in contracted position and to be interposed between said main top sections when the same are in their extended positions, said supplemental top being provided with downwardly extending hooked members adapted to receive the edges of the main top sections when the supplemental top is positioned thereover, and said end frames being provided with recesses therein adapted to receive the downwardly extending hooked members of the supplemental top when said supplemental top is positioned between the extended main top sections.

4. In an extension table, top sections one of which is adjustable relatively to the other, a supplemental top formed of a pair of similarly t'ormed L-shaped sections, said sections being adapted to be positioned side by side over the main top sections when the table is contracted, and end to end between the main top sections when the table is extended.

5. In an extension table, top sections one of which is adjustable relatively to the other, a supplemental top formed of a pair of similarly formed L-shaped sections, the wide portions of said sections being equal in width to the width of the top sections of the table, and the narrow portions of said sections being one-half the width of the top sections of said table, and the narrow and wide portions of said sections being of the same length.

6. In an extension table, slidably connected end frames, a main top section mounted on each of said end frames, a sectional supplemental top adapted to overlie said main top sections when the table is contracted, the sections of said supplemental top being arranged side by side over the main top sections and being adapted when disposed end to end between the extended main top sections to form a top section co-extensive in 55 width therewith.
