To all whom 2' 1/ may concern Be it known that we, MICHAEL J. HAR- RINGTON and FRAXK JUTRASH, citizens of the United States, residing at Laurium, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Proof Baskets; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in dust proof baskets.

One object of the invention is to provide a basket of this character having an improved construction and arrangement of hinged dust and weather proof coverings adapted to be folded down to an out of the way position when not in use and to be swung up in the form of a hood over the contents of the basket whereby the contents will be en tirely protected from dust or from the weather.

Another object is to provide a basket of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation and which may be employed for any desired purpose.

\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved basket showing the covers in operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the covers folded or in an open position. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 4 is a verticalcross section. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the cover supporting bows; Fig. (3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one side of the frame showing more particularly the arrangement of the inner ends of the cover supporting bows.

Our improved basket may be of any suitable size and shape and comprises a frame consisting of a bottom 1 and sides 2, said sides comprising a series of upwardly projecting bars or members 3 which are connected at their upper ends by an upper ring or band 4 and intermediate their ends by a lower band or ring 5. The sides 2 of the frame are preferably covered by a flexible covering 6 of canvas or other suitable fabric which is secured at its lower edge to the edge of the bottom and at its upper edge to the upper ring or band -il in any suitable manner.

While we have shown and described the covering 6 as constructed of canvas or similar fabric we do not wish to be understood as confining ourselves to this particular style of covering as it is obvious the same may be formed of any suitable material.

The basket may be provided with any suitable form of handles according to the use for which the basket is designed the same being shown in the present instance as a clothes basket or hamper and as having bail shaped handles 7 secured tothe upwardly projecting end bars 3 of the frame, said bars having their ends turned or bent to form eyes 8 with which are engaged the looped ends of the handles as shown.

The upwardly projecting side bars 3 of the frame are extended above the upper ring or band to form segmental heads 9 in which are arranged series of apertures 10. Loosely connected at their inner ends to the outer apertures 10 in the heads 9 are outer cover supporting bows 11 while to the inner pair of apertures 10 are loosely connected the ends of an inner pair of cover supporting bows 12. One of the inner bows 12 has its inner ends offset or bent at right angles where the same are connected with the heads 9, said offset ends of this bow permitting the same to be swung up beneath the adjoining or corresponding inner bow whereby the edges of the cover are permitted to overlap and form a tight dust proof engagement. The bow 12 having the offset in ner ends is slightly smaller than the adjoining or corresponding inner bow, thus permitting the latter to swing over the former when said bows are brought together- Arranged over and secured to the bows 11 and 12 and to the upper ring or band i are flexible cover sections 13 which are preferably formed of canvas or similar fabric and are adapted to be collapsed or folded when the bows are swung down to open or inoperative positions on the upper edges of the band or ring 4: of the body frame of the basket.

By constructing and arranging the cover sections of the basket in the manner described, it will be seen that the same may be readily swung up over the contents of the basket thereby forming a tight dustand water proof covering which will protect the contents of the basket from dirt, moisture or from the direct heat or rays of the sun.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described our invention, whatwe claim is;

A basket of the character described comprising a fabric cover frame forming the body of the basket, said frame being C0111- posed of two oppositely positioned vertical members the upper ends of which terminate in heads extending above the edge of the basket, bands passing around the said basket and secured to the upright members, a

plurality of cover supporting bows loosely connected at their lower ends to the heads of the vertical members of the frame and adapted to swing upwardly to operative positions and downwardly to inoperative positions on the upper edges of the body of the basket, the ends of the inner bows being loosely engaged with slots formed in the heads of the vertical members of the frame, the ends of one of the said inner bows being bent at right angles to slidingly engage said slots, and fabric secured to the bows and to the upper edge of the basket, whereby a dust and water proof covering is provided for the said basket when the bows are drawn upwardly to operative position.
