ARTHUR R. TUCKER, OF UNION CENTER, WISCONSIN.
STAIR-SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18,1913.
Application filed July lf3, 1909. Serial No. 507,804.
To all whom t may concern:
Be itknown that I, ARTHUR R'TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union Center, in the `county of Juneau and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvement-s in Stair-Squares, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide an instrument designed most especially for the use of stairbuilders to facilitate the laying out of work and more particularly the carriage of stairways.
In accordance with this invention, the instrument comprises complemental head pieces, a blade pivotally 'connected to each head piece, and an intermediate connecting link, the several parts being relatively adjustable to admit adapting the instrument for the laying out of work to meet varying conditions and locations.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combinations of parts which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in t-he accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a detail view of an instrument of the nature aforesaid embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the instrument. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a joint on the line sa of Fig. l showing the parts on a larger scale. 4t is a sectional view of a modified form of joint in which longitudinal slots are formed in both blades to receive the fastening.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all` the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The instrument comprises like or similar head pieces 1 which may be of wood or metal or a combination of such materials as are commonly employed in the construction of bevels, squares and like appliances. A blade 2 is connected to each head piece l preferably by means which will admit of relative angular adjustment so that the blades 2 may be moved to any desired angle with reference to the head piece according to the nature of the Work in hand. A thumb screw 3 or like fastening is employed for pivotally connecting the parts l and 2 to admit of their relative adjustment and the same being secured in the adjusted position. A link 4 connects the blades 2 and is relatively adjustable. The link and blades may be of metal or other material and are sufliciently thin to admit of the parts folding into compact form. A slot 5 is provided in the outer end ortion of each blade 2 and extends lengt iwise of the latter and receives a thumb screw or fastening 6 by means of which the link 4L is secured in the adjusted position with reference to the blades 2.
From the foregoing in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be understood that the invention provides an instrument of special advantage to facilitate the work of stair-builders in laying out the carriages of stairways since the several parts may be adjusted to meet existing' conditions and the particular work in hand and when adjusted facilitates the laying out of the work, the severalv parts, such as the link and blades constituting straight edges for directing t-he pencil or other marker when outlining the work.
Having thus describedthe invention, what is claimed is- A stair-builders square comprising complemental head pieces of flat material, a pai-r of blades of different lengths constructed of material of the same thickness as the said head pieces, one end of each blade being pivotally connected to the upper face of one of said head pieces and centrally with respect thereto, a link differing in length from the blades and having its ends pivotally and slidably 'conncctedto said blades, said link and the said head pieces being of equal thickness and having straight side edges, and means for securing said link and blades together in adjusted positions and for securing the blades to the head pieces when adjusted angular-ly.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR R. TUCKER. Vitnesses:
E. V. VERNICK, HENRY KAUFFMAN.
