FREDERICK N. MARVICK, OF PALATKA, FLORIDA.
JOINTED PITCH-BOARD FOR SQUARES.
SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 243,592, dated June 28, 1881.
Application filed March 22, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK N. MAR- VICK, of Palatka, Putnam county, Florida, haveinventcd a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Scales, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a plan view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same, taken through the line x :0, Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6,
. 1o 7 are views illustrating different uses of the instrument.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to facilitate 1 5 the laying out of carpenters and joincrs Work.
Theinvention consists in acarpenters square provided with a middle-jointed rule slotted in bothsections, and connected by a clamp-bolt and nut with the slotted arms of the square, as hereinafter described. 4
A represents a square, made of steel or other suitable material.
In the arms of the square A are formed longitudinal slots B, extending nearly the entire 2 length of the said arms.
0 is a rule, made of steel or other suitable material. The rule 0 is made in two parts, connected to each other at their adjacent ends by a rule-joint, the arms of the rule 0 having longitudinal slots D formed in them, extending nearly their entire length.
The rule 0 and square A'are secured to each other by bolts E,which arepassed through the slots B D, and have hand-nuts F screwed upon them, so that by loosening the hand-nuts F 5 the square A and rule 0 can be ad justedin any desired position upon each other. The square A and rule 0 have scales of division-marks of inches and fractions of an inch formed upon them. 40
With this construction the instrument can be used as a pitch-board in laying out stairs, as illustrated in Fig. 3, for laying out dovetails upon timber, as shown in Fig. 4, for laying out miter-boxes in the usual way, as shown in Fig. 5, for finding the length and bevel of rafters, as shown in Fig. 7, can have straightedges attached to it and be used as an extended square, and can be used for solving various other problems in carpentry and joining.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A carpenters square provided With the mid dle-jointed rule 0, slotted in both sections, I
and connected by clamp-bolt and nut with the slotted arms of said square, as shownand described,
FREDERICK N. MARVICK. [L 8.]
