Description
i 1h zohom tondi/chimera; l l j Be it known that LFRNCISL. DANIELS, of Boston, in the county" of Suffolk and State ofMassachnensilydischarged therefrom.
i My present invcutioinrelates to thesame class of dust-pans, and i l i i *l Its object vis to improve the construction ot the pan, t so that al l its parts may be readily made and `put to- .gether, and so that the dust-discharge spout may be "combined with the trough,` `to operateNto better advan- -tagein connection therewith. l

t f Letters PatentNo. 105,315, claterllnly 12, 1870.
MrRovnn nosa-PAN.
l -I.The ieiieiule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part: o! the same.
sett`s, have invented certainfnew and useful Improve- ,nients in Dust-Pans, of which the following isa speci-` ication.. v InLettersIatentNo. 97,276, granted me onthe 30th4 :1 November, 1869, `I have deseribedand claimedadustpanuprovided at its rear part with atro'ugh or dust-re- -ce pta cle, and an inclined curved lip or spout on one end `ofthe trough, to allow the accumulated dust, Ste., to be My finrentionconsistsi First, in'the construction of the tronghot' the dust- Apauwth an acute-angled and inclined spout formed at therearand on: one side of' thetrough, in the manner hereinafter described.
Second,in a dust-pan,th e`body of 'which is mim posed of three .pf ccs. of. s'hcet metal, shaped and comblned, substantiallyas `hereinafter described, so as toforin .the trougb, `thc incline `leading to the trough,
H i pthc sides, for preventingthe escape of thc dust, and i the'acnte-angled and inclined spout, from .which the dustis discharged. I i
Themannerinwhich my invention is or may bc "carried into ciieetwillbe readily understood hy refer- `ence tothe accompanying drawing, in which--` Figure l 1s apcrspective vicw of a dust-pan made i in accordance with my invention;
-Figure 3 s a longitudinal vertical section of the same. 'lhe hodyof the pan is composedof the three pieces ofsheet-metal, abc.`
'.lh'e part a is hentrat three points, xy z, to forin the inclineleading to the trough, and the sides and` bottom tot the trough.
-Th two end pieces, b c, cover` or close the ends of A the trough, heilig soldered, or otherwise suitably secured inplace, and the three parts, a'b c, thus form the hodyof the pan;
lhe edges a' ot'rthe piece a, along the incline which i leads tothe trough,`are 'bent up so as to 'form sides,
' whichprevcnt the; escape of the dust; and the side t i 4piec'esare so formed that their upper edges are .by reason of the acutcness of not parallel with the bottom of the trough, but slant upward, or so as to form a prolongation of the slanting edges of the sides a, which follow the inclination of the inclined part of the bottom of the pan.
The back of the trough, to which the side-pieces b c are united, is correspondingly raised, so that the rear of the trough is its highest part, and is raised ahovethe inclined bottom to such an extent as to prevent the dirt, when swept up theincline, from bcirng thrown over the back of thc pan.
Upon one side of the trough I place au acute-angled and inclined spout, which is formed by the j unction ofthe hack of the trough with the side c. In
- order to produce a-spout of this form,`I cut or shape theend ot' 'the b ack of the trough as showniu iig. .1, so that its top shall overhang or extend beyond its lower edge, where it is united with the bottom ot` the trough. The side c, in order to be united with this projecting part, must he inclined outwardly, forming' an obtuse angle with the bottom, and an acute angle with the back, thus allowing the dust to freely escape from the bottom of the trough, and, at the same time, the angle which it forms with the hack, Vpreyenting't'the dust from spreading, and gathering and discharging it in a narrow or small stream.
So far as this construction' of the dust dischargemake they pan as herein described, as, when thus made,
it is very cheap, and can be put together and finished with the greatest case.
Having now described my invention, and the man-- ner in which `the same is or maybe carried into ciect,` What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 `1. The construction of the dusttrougl1 or reccpta cle iu a dust-pan, with an acute-angled and ontwardlyinclined spout formed at the rear and on one side of the trough, .substantially in the manner shown and described.
2. A' dust-pan, thc body of which is composed of parts 'a b c, formed and'comhined as herein shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
Y FRANCIS L, DANIELS.
