IMPROVEMENT IN FUNNELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,637, dated November 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRIDGET FRENCH, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Funnels, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in combining with the body of the tunnel, and with separate nozzles applied thereto, an air-tube, which projects below the body so as to extend to the tip of the nozzle, in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section, Fig. 2 a perspective view of the several parts detached.
A represents the body of the funnel, and B B, the separate nozzle. The tips or apexes a a of the latter are made of various sizes to fit different-sized holes into which the liquid is to be discharged; but the upper ends b b are made of one size, so as to fit the nipple or bearing 0 of the body. The latter is made in the form of the frustum of a cone, and has two beads, 01 d, at top and bottom, between which is a rubber band, f, stretched upon the periphery, and serving as a packing to make atight joint to the nozzle and keep it in place. A small air-tube, 0, extends from the top ofthe funnel downward, following the incline and passing through the throat, and thence extends down below the parts 0 a distance equal or nearly so to the length of one of the nozzles, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Its objectis to discharge the air from the vessel as the liquid fills it. A wire-cloth strainer, g, is located across the throat of the funnel, for the purpose of straining the contents as they pass through.
I am aware that separate nozzles have before been used; also, a strainer; and also, an airdischarge; these I do not claim, separately.
My invention consists in combining with the body of the funnel and the separate nozzles the air-pipe O, which extends through both parts so as to allow the escape of the imprisoned air. If it extended only the length of the body A a solid body of liquid would lie in the nozzle below it and it would be of no avail. This arrangement of the air-tube is special to a funnel made with separate nozzles.
Another novelty lies in the employment of the packing f, which serves to make a water-tight joint, and also to produce greater adhesion between the parts, and thus securely hold the nozzle in place.
\Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s- The body A, tube 0, packing f, and enlarged and detachable nozzle B, arranged to operate in connection with each other, as set forth.
