FENGE CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 22, 1912.

FENCE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 22, 1912.
Patented Feb. 11,1913.
Serial No. 716,512.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. MOI-IENRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lesterville, in the county of Rey-' nolds and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Clamps, of which the following is a specification. 4
This invention is an improvement in wire fence clamps and has for an object to provide a novel construction whereby fencing material such as ordinarily found on the market, or similar material, may be clamped for stretching or other purposes; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a clamp embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the clamp as in use.
As shown, the clamp comprises a frame A having side bars B braced by a cross bar C and by a beam D, which beam D forms the bed of the clamp proper. The side bars B are provided, one with an opening B forming a bearing in which trunnion E at the lower end of the clamping bar E is removably fitted, while the other or upper bar B has a depending lug B in which is formed an open seat or notch B in which bears the trunnion E at the upper end of the clamping bar, such trunnion E being held removably in the seat B by a rod F more fully described hereinafter. The clamping bar has a web E the swinging edge of which moves along the inner face of the base D which face D of the base D is formed or curved eccentrically to the pivots at B and B of the clamping bar so that when the clamping bar is swung to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, it will clamp the fence or wire material G against the eccentric face of the bed D. The rod F forms what might be termed a latch as it operates to detachably hold the trunnion E in the seat B and at the same time the latch rod F may be released from the full line position shown in Fig. 2 by lifting the end thereof at F over the stop pin F to permit the latch rod to swing to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 and thus permit the convenient removal of the clamping bar from the frame. The rod F, it will be noticed pivots by an inturned portion at F to the top side bar B of the frame and may swing on its pivot to release the trunnion E the rod F being curved or bent outwardly at F adjacent to the seat 13 to form a bow to partially fit around the trunnion E when the parts are secured as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The clamping web E it will be noticed, is rounded or convex on its swinging edge to conform to the trough like concavity on the inner face of the base D and in practice the clamping web will not only press the fenc ing material against the base but by reason of the eccentric form of the base, will tighten more firmly as tension is put on the fencing in the act of stretching the same.
In adjusting the clamping web to secure the fencing a slight kink will be made in the fencing material which together with the clamping of the eccentric will operate to secure the fencing firmly during the act of stretching. The clamping bar being removable at one end, will adjust itself to slight variations in the size of the wire of the fencing material as in such material the upper and lower wires are usually larger than the intermediate ones.
I claim:
1. A clamp, substantially as described, comprising a frame having a base formed with a curved clamping face, said frame having an opening forming a bearing and also provided opposite said opening with an open seat forming part of a bearing, a clamp bar having trunnions, one of which is fitted in the said opening and the other of which is fitted in the said seat, a latch rod pivoted to the frame at one side of the seat and having a bowed portion opposite. the seat and a free end extending beyond said bowed portion and a stop on the frame with which said free end engages whereby to hold the latch rod in position to secure the trunnion of the latch bar in the open seat, substantially as set forth.
2. A clamp, substantially as described, comprising a frame having a clamping base with an eccentric face and also provided with bearings, one of which is an open seat, a clamping bar having trunnions fitted to said bearings and means for locking the trunnion in the open seat, said means being movable relatively to the frame, substantially as set forth.
3. A clamp, substantially as described,\
comprising a frame having a clamping securing the trunnion in said. open bearing, base and a clamplng her having means 00- substantlally as set forth.
operatin With said elztmpin base and provided at its ends With trunn ions, the frame JOHN CLARENCE MOHENRY' having a, bearing in Which one of said trun- Witnesses: nlons 15 held and an open bearlng 1n whleh LUOIUS E. SI-IY, the other trunnion is pivoted and means for JAMES T. DOBBINS.
