JOHN E. CUNNINGHAM AND LODA E. HAINES, OF MARTINSVILLE, INDIANA.
PLOW-CLEVIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN E. CUNNING- HAM and Lona E. HAiNns, citizens of the United States, residing at Martinsville, in the'county of Morgan and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PlowClevises, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clevises, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the connection with the draft animal can be readily adjusted in either a vertical or horizontal direction, as may be required or desired in order to obtain the best results A further object of the invention is to provide a clevis of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be easily and quickly adjusted as may be desired, and which can be readily substituted for the ordinary clevis.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combina tions and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of an adjustable clevis constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 38 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi cated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates the plow beam or other member to which the clevis is designed to be attached. A vertical guide frame is arranged at the forward end of the plow beam and connected thereto by means of the side plates 2. The vertical frame is rectangular in shape and comprises the upright side members 3 which have their upper and lower ends connected by he horizontal members 4. The forward ends of the side plates 2 are secured to the vertical members 3, while the rear ends of the plates converge inwardly toward each other and are tapered in width. The rear ends thereof fitting against opposite sides of the plow "beam i and being secured thereto in some suitable manner as by means of the fastening members 5. The vertical side members 3 of the frame are provided upon their innerfaces with the guide grooves 6 which receive tongues 7 at the end of a slide 8. A threaded rod 9 engages an intermediate portion of the slide 8 and has the ends thereof swiveled in the upper and lower horizontal bars 4 of the frame. The upper extremity of the threaded adjusting rod 9 is formed with a flattened head 10 having an opening 11 therein. It will thus be obvious that by inserting a pin in the opening 11 the adjusting rod 9 can be readily turned for the purpose of raising and lowering the slide 8.
A horizontal guide member 12 is carried by the slide 8 and connected thereto by means of a web 14:. One end of the horizontal guide 12 extends laterally beyond the side of the vertical guide frame and is connected by means of a suitable brace 1A to the plow beam 1. One end of the brace 14 engages a rearwardly projecting arm 15 of the horizontal guideway, while the opposite end of the brace engages an eye 16 upon one of the plates 2. The horizontal guide member 12 is slotted and has a slide 17 movably mounted therein, the said slide 17 being formed with a suitable draft connection such as the eye 18. A threaded adjusting rod 19 extends through the slotted portion of the horizontal guide 12 and is swiveled in opposite ends thereof, one extremity of the adjusting rod being formed with a flattened head 20 having a perforation 21 therein. This flattened head provides a convenient means for turning the adjusting rod 19 to move the slide 17 back and forth within the slot. It will thus be obvious that by turning the adjusting rod the draft attaching member 18 can be vertically adjusted as desired, while by turning the horizontal adjusting screw 19, the draft attaching member 18 can be moved laterally as desired.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A plow clevis in combination with a beam, a rectangular frame, a pair of tapering plates having the broadened ends thereof secured to the opposite'sides of the frame, the opposite ends of said tapering plates being converged so as to receive the beam, said frame having the vertical sides thereof provided with a groove on the inner face thereof, a draft attaching means received within said grooves, a vertical adjusting rod swiveled between the top and bottom of the frame and having a threaded connection with the draft attaching means for moving the same.
2. A device of the character described comprising a rectangular frame, a beam, a pairof supporting plates having one end thereof engaging the opposite sides of said frame, the opposite ends of said plates engaging said beams, the vertical sides of said frame being provided with a groove, a slide received within said grooves, a slotted horizontal guide carried by said slide and having one ending thereof extending beyond said frame, a draft connecting slide movable within the slot of said guide, a horizontally adjusting screw swiveled at the endings of said guide and disposed within the slot thereof, said screw having a threaded connection with said draft connecting slide, an adjusting screw swiveled between the top and bottom of said frame and having a threaded connection with the first mentioned slide for vertically adjusting the same.
In testimony whereof we affix our signa-. tures in presence of two witnesses.
