FLAGSTAFF FORiGOLF-LINKS 'AND THE LIKE.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Aapr. t3, i915.
Application filed March 2'7, 1914. Serial No. 827,54*?.
T0 all `whma it may concern Be it known that l, CHARLns GIBSON, golf-club maker, a subject of the King of Great Britain, of Westward Ho Golf Club, Northam, in the county of Devon, England, have invented new and useful improvements in or Relating to Flag-Staffs for Golf-Links and the like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and eXact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
rllhe invention comprises certain improvements in and relating to Hag-staffs tor golf links and the like of the type in which the flag-stati: is mounted upon a spring controlled fitting adapted to work on a spiked metal rod which is inserted in the ground.
rllhese devices have only partially served the purpose intended, and the object of the invention is to prevent in a more eflicient manner, the enlargement of the hole in the ground in which the spiked end of the metal rod is inserted, which may be occasioned by the abnormal wind pressure against the flag staff or by sheep pressing against the same, or anything else which may cause the same to lean in the direction of pressure from their set position.
According to this invention the flag-statt is held in engagement with the spiked metal rod by the action of a spring held in compression by a flexible connection one end being secured to the spiked rod and the other being threaded to receive a nut and washer which bears down upon the top ot the spring the `lower end engaging with projections formed on the Hag-staff member, thereby firmly retaining it in a normally upright position with respect to the spiked rod and having means whereby the tension of the spring may be adjusted according to whether a long or short staft7 is intended to be used.
ln order that my invention may be fully understood l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings in which 1d Figure is a view of the complete device partly in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of same. Fig. 3 is a view showing the flexible connection secured to the spiked rod and the means employed for adjusting the tension of the spring. Fig. l is a device to be hereinafter referred to.
The spiked rod 10 is provided at its upper end with an enlarged portion or flange 11 upon which is adapted to rest the hollow tube or casing 12 and prevented from lateral movement thereon by a circular projection 13. Centrally disposed on said projection is a ring or the like 14 to which is attached a flexible connection 15, the upper portion of which engages with an eye or hook 16 formed on the threaded rod or spindle 17.
The hollow tube or casing 12 is provided internally near its lower end with two or more projecting pieces 18 which serve to retain the spring 19 said spring being held in compression thereon by a nut and washer working on the threaded rod or spindle 17 thereby allowing the tension of same to be adjusted as desired by a suitable key or the like 20.
The upper end oi the casing 1Q is threaded or otherwise formed so as to engage with the flag or other sta 21 which staff is provided with a recess 9.2 to enable it to clear the upper end of the threaded spindle 17.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A tension device for flag-staffs comprising a pair of members having adjacent ends disposed in abutting relation, one of said members being tubular and the abutting end of the other member being entirely closed, yieldable means constantly tending to draw said adjacent ends into engagement, and a projection on the closed end ot the last named member extending a predetermined distance into the tubular member to prevent bodily lateral movement thereoil and permitting same to tilt laterally against the influence of said yieldable means.
2. A tension device for fiag-staii's comprising a pair of members having adjacent ends disposed in abutting relation, one ot said members being tubular and the abutting end ot the other member being entirely closed, a spring within the tubular member having the end thereof 'adjacent therother In testimony whereof` I have signed my member in engagement'with a fixed portion name to this specification in the presence of the tubular member, a follower element of two subscribing witnesses.
engaging the other end of the spring, and CHARLES GIBSON. a ring link loosely connected with the fol Witnesses: v
lower element and with the member having E. L. I-ImzDLE,
the closed abutting end. Y A. HOOPER.
