LOUIS A. ESSNER, OF VlTEST NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY.
SHUT-OFF DEVICE} QR V ALVE FOR CARIBURETERS.
Specification of Letters la'tent. PatentedFeb, 11,1913,
Application filed April 15, 1912. Serial No. 690,964.
To all whom it may concern.
citizen of the United States, residing at West New York, in the county of Hudson and State of- New Jersey,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shut- Off Devices or Valves for Carbureters, of which the, following is a specification.
My invention relates to shut-ofi' devices or valves for carburetors.
It is absolutely necessary to have the carbureter valve of an. internal combustion engine as near as possible to the carbureter, so that when the valve is shut off the feeding of gasolene to the carbureter will stop immediately, but on account of the valve being close to the Carlo-ureter, if the carbureter is set on fire from a back-fire from the engine, which often happens, the automobile or launch in which the engine is installed is set on fire and damaged or entirely destroyed, as it is impossible to shut off the valve manually without being burnt.
My invention therefore has for its object to obviate the above result of a carbureter being set on fire by providing a shut-oft device embodying removably applied means which is readily fusible or destructible by fire and adapted to hold the valve open and means adapted to automatically close the valve when it is released through the de struction of the holding means by the fire from the burning carburetor, or when it is released by the manual removal of the holding means. i I
It has for a further object to provide means of the character and for the purpose above set forth which embodies advantages in point of simple and inexpensive construction and eifective operatic In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of an automobile. showing the valve to which my invention is to be applied. Fig. 2, a plan view of my invention applied to a valve. Fig. 8, an end view thereof. Fig. 4, a plan view of the holding plate. Fig. 5, a side view of one of the pins.
For the purpose of showing the location of the valve to which my invention is to be applied, I have illustrated it in Fig. 1 of the drawings, forming a part of this application, in connection with the parts of an automobile directly associated therewith.
Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts, 1 designates the frame or chamis of an automobile on the front of which is mounted an internal combustion engine having the usual crank and gear casing 2,- cylinders 3, manifold 4 connecting the cylinders, pipe 5 connecting the water jackets of the cylinders with the radiator, not shown,
and fly-wheel 6 of the engine crank shaft and on the back of the frame or chassis of the automobile is mounted the usial oil tank .7.
A carb ureter 8 of the usual construction is mounted at one side of the engine and connected with the manifold by a branch pipe 9 thereof and the carbureter is connected with the oil tank by a pipe 10 through which oil is fed to the carburetor.
The pipe 10 is provided adjacent the carbureter, preferably directly under it, with a valve casing 11 having lateral lugs 12 and 13, the ends of which are provided with pins Hand 15 respectively grooved at their outer ends.
A tapered valve 16 is provided in the casing, one end of the valve having a laterally extending handle 17 provided with a pin 18, grooved at its outer end and the other end of the valve having a reduced portion 19 extending beyond the casing and provided with a spiral spring 20 located between washers 21, the outer washer bearing against a pin 22 which holds it in place.
The valve is held in its open position, shown in full lines in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, by means of a plate 23 of material readily fusible or destructible by fire, preferably bismuth, the plate being held removably in placeby means of a hole 24 therein engaging the pin 15 of the lug 13 and a hole 25 therein engaging the pin 18.
The valve 1s automatically closed spirit and scope. of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my'invention and claims. 3
I claim a a 1. Ina device of the character set forth, a casing having lugs, a valve in said casing, means readily destructible by fire secured at one end to the valve and at the other end to one of the lugs of the valve casing and normally holding the valve open and re- 2. In a device-of the character set forth,
a casing having lugs, a valve in said casing,
the terms of the 7 following casing and normally holding the valve open detachable mean's readily destructible by fire secured at one end't'o the valve and at the other end 'to one of the lugs of the valve and resilient extensible and retractible means secured at one end to the valve and at the other end to the other lug of the valve casing and adapted to automatically close "the.valve when the valve is released from the holding means, substantially as described.
. In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ouis A. ESSNER.
