To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL F. STOFFEL, a
citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and btate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings; 1
This invention relates to governors for motor vehicles and more particularly for large trucks and similar vehicles driven by internal combustion engines. I
The primary object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable. and inexpensive governor that can be interposed between the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine and the carbureter thereof to limit:
The mechanical construction by which I- attain the above and other objects will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an internal combustion engine provided with a governor in accordance with my invention;

Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
In the drawing, 1 denotes a conventional form of internal combustion engine having an exhaust manifold 2, an intake manifold 3, and a carbureter 4.
Interposed between the carbureter 4 and the intake manifold 3 and suitably connected thereto are the ends of a connection or short conduit 5. The connection 5 has the bore thereof stepped, with one end of less diameter than the other thereby providing an annular shoulder 5 The small end of the connection is provided with opposed bosses 6 set to one side of the longitudinal axis of the connection, as best shown in Fig.
' 3, and adjustable in the bosses 6 are bear-' ings 7 for the pintles 8 of a rock shaft 9. The rock shaft 9 is provided with a butterfly or throttle valve 10 controlling the passage of an explosive mixture through the connection 5 to the intake manifold 3. On account of the rock shaft 9 being set to one side of the connection, the valve 10 is naturally unbalanced, exposing considerable area to the suction end of the connection, whereby suction in'the manifold will tend to close the valve.
The rock shaft 9, intermediate the ends thereof, has an arm 11 with the lower or outer end thereof curved to engage the inner wall 'of the connection 5 and limit the opening movement of the valve or throttle 10.- The arm 11 adjacent the curved end thereof is connected by a coiled retractile spring 13 to an adjustable member 14, said member being in the form of a screw mounted in a sleeve 15 attached to a nipple 16, carried by the connection 5 and communicatingtherewith. The outer end of the sleeve 15 and the adjustable member 14. are closed by a cap or thimble 17 screwed, sealed or locked, as at 16 upon the nipple 16, said cap preventing accidental adjustment of the member 14 or any tampering therewith after the governor is regulated for prescribed speed. The coiled spring 13 will hold the throttle 10 normally open, yet permitting of the same being closed, and the closing of said throttle is limited by astop 18 carried by an adjustable member 19. The
' adjustable member 19 is'mounted in a nipple 20 communicating with the connection 5 and said nipple has a detachable cap or thimble 21 sealed or locked, similar to the thimble 17, preventing accidental adjustment of the member 19.
In operation, the valve 10, even when'in a closed position, allows enough explosive mixture to pass between thesmall side of the valve and the connection to supply the en- .gine and maintain a predetermined speed.
It is thought that the operation and utility of the governo" will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be under stood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim. 7
What I claim is A governor adapted for mounting between the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine and the carbureter'thereof, comprising a connection, an ofiset pivoted throttle valve within said connection, an arm at the pivot of said throttle valve and extending downwardly in the connection to engage a wall of the connection to limit the opening movement of said valve, a screw carried by said connection, a spring connecting said screw to said arm and adapted to hold said throttle valve normally open, a thimble carried by said connection inclosing said screw, an adjustable stop carried by i aeo asv said connection and adapted to limit the closing movement of said throttle valve, and a thimble carried by said connection and in closing said adjustable stop.
