Application filed i1 une 13, 1918. Seria1No.239,69 5.
To all whom it may concern: i it Be it known that I, HARVEY C. RAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves for Explosive-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means or attachments for use in combining steam and gasolene in an internal combustion engine and it has for its objects among others to pro vide a simple and cheap device readily applied, positive and reliable in its action and capable of manufacture at minimum cost. It embodies in the one element a multiplicity of parts and I term it the three-inane lever cock. It embodies a check valve and a needle valve, the check valve being located in front of the needle valve and is adapted to be opened by the air in passing through the air cock from the top straight down to the carburetor manifold, and the quantity of water that may pass through this valve is governed by a thumb screw with a jam nut. The]:1 check valve is controllable from the das Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a. part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged central vertical section through the device constituting my.
present improvement.
Like numerals refer to like parts in both Referring to the drawings,
1 designates the engine, 2 the radiator and 3 the clash-board of a motor vehicle, all of any well-known or approved form of construction except as hereinafter specified.
My present improvement is clearly shown in Fig. 2 which is an enlarged sectional view of the embodiment thereof and it comprises a casing 4 through which is a longitudinal vertically disposed passage 5 controlled by a rotary valve 6, the stem of which is provided with a handle 7 with which is connected, as at 8, one end of a controllinglever 9 which extends through an opening the dash 3 and is provided with; axsuitable, handle or the like 10 by which it may be manipulated to actuate the valve, asmaybe required. w Ihe casing d is screw-threaded at its upperend, as at 11, to receive a nut 12 for connection therewith of theair pipe 13, while its lower end is screw-threaded, as at 1 11;, for connection with the manifold 15.
The horizontal branch 16 of the casing l is screw-threaded, as at 17, to receive the nut 18 for the connection of the water pipe 19 adapted to receive water from some suitable source, as from the radiator or return Water on the water jacket of the engine, and is provided with a suitable cook or valve 20 by which the flow of water can be controlled.
21 is a check valve, in the present instance in the form of a ball fitted to a seat 22 in the bore of the extension 16, while 23 is a spring acting on said valve, the other end of the spring having a bearing against a shoulder 24 on the screw 25 which is threaded into the casing e, the outer end of the screw being provided with a thumb nut or the like 26 and a jam nut 27, as seen best in Fig. 2. This screw is provided with a valve member 28, as seen in Fig. 2.
In practice, this check valve is located in front of the needle valve and is opened by the air in passing through the air cock from the top straight down to the carbureter manifold, and the quantity of water passing through the valve is governed by the thumb screw with the jam nut, by which means ready adjustment can be made and the parts retained in their adjusted position.
Modifications in details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is 1. In a device for the purpose described, a casing having a longitudinal bore therethrough, arotary valve controlling said bore, and combined check and needle valves disposed transverselyto said bore disposed in a common passage transverse to said bore and controllable by the same means.
2. In a device for the purpose described, a casing with a. longitudinal bore, a rotary valve controlling the passage through said bore, said casing having a lateral extension, a check valve in said extension, and a needle valve operating in conjunction with the check valve and controllableby the same means.
3. In a device for the purpose described, a
casing with a longitudinalbore, ;arotaryc valve controlling the passage through said bore, said casing having a. lateral extension, a check valve'm said entenslon, and a needle valve operatmg 1n con u c.t1on wlthihegcheck' witlra horizontal branch and an extension and IIItBISBOtlllgbOlGS 1n said casing and extenslon, a rotary valve controlling the long1- vtu dinal;b-ranc h=of the casing and combined check and needle Valves in said extension and controllable by means common to both.
