To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RUPERT ARTHUR Smunos and CHARLES FRnnnRIoK BRAY- nRooKn, subjects of the King of Great Britain, both residing at 67 Highbury road, Luton, Beds, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carburetors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in carbureters.
According to this invention the fuel is supplied through a needle valve held upon its seat by a spring and having a stem upon the surface of which is a spiral groove. The
stem is surrounded by a jacket and the needle valve together with the stem is actuated by a Bowden wire. The lower end of the jacket and the needle valve, which is preferably tapered, extends into a fuel reservoir, while the upper end of the stem extends into the induction pipe of the engine. In the induction pipe is a spring controlled valve which is opened to allow of the passage of air by the suction of the engine.
The accompanying drawing shows a carbureter made in accordance with this invention and is a section of the same.
A is a tapering needle valve having a stem 0 upon the surface of which is a spiral groove D. lVhere the needle valve joins the stem C a head for the valve is provided by tapering the lower end of the stem. WVhen the valve is closed, said head rests on a seat B. As before stated the needle itself is tapered, the taper being very slight, but when the needle is fully inserted it may close the connection between the fuel chamber and the spiral groove in the valve stem, but the construction is also such that the communication between the fuel chamber and the spiral groove may be closed by the head of the needle. At the top of the stem C is a spring E which constantly tends to press the needle valve upon its seat, and F is a Bowden wire connected to the stem G and by which the needle valve is lifted. The stem .0 is surrounded by a jacket G which together with the needle valve extends into a fuel reservoir H. The upper end of the stem C extends into the induction pipe J of the engine and K is an air entrance pipe in which is a valve L held closed against a stop M by a spring N. When the needle valve A is lifted off its seat by means of the Between Wire the :tuel flows past the Specification of Letters Patent. Patel 1110a Sept. 23, 1919.

3. In a carburetor the combination of a needle valve extending into a fuel reservoir, a seat for the same, a spring adapted to press the needle valve upon its seat, a stem upon the needle valve, a spiral. groove upon the stem, a jacket surrounding the stem and means for actuating the needle valve.
4:. In a carburetor, the combination of a needle valve, a seat for the same, a spring adapted to press the needle valve upon its seat, a stem upon the needle valve, a spiral groove upon the stem, a jacket surrounding the stem, said stem extending into the induction pipe, and means for actuating the needle valve.
5. In a carbureter, the combination of a needle valve, a seat for the same, a spring adapted to press the needle valve upon its seat, a stem upon the needle valve, a spiral groove upon the stem, a jacket surrounding the stem, said stem extending into the induction pipe, and a Bowden wire for actuating the needle valve.
6. In a carburetor the combination of a tapered needle valve, a seat for the same, a spring adapted to press the needle valve upon its seat, a stem upon the needle valve, a spiral groove upon the stem, a jacket surrounding the stem and means for actuating the needle valve.
7. In a carburetor, the combination of a tapered needle "alve extending into a fuel reservoir, a seat for the same, a spring adapted to press the needle valve upon its seat, a stem- 11 on the needle valve, a spiral groove upon t. e stem, a jacket surrounding valve.
