Letters Patent No. 105,208, dated July 12, 1870.
GRAB FOR HAND-HOLE PLATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent Aand making part of the same To whom it may concern Be it known-that I, JAMES S. HooroN, of New Carlisle, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Iudiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grab for Hand-hole Plates; and I do declare that the following is atrue and accurate description vthereof', reference being had to the aceompanyingdrawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improvement, and
Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of crabs for hand-hole plates, whereby .the work of applying 'or removing the plates from the hand-holes is greatly facilitated, and without removing the nut from the bolt.
It consists in making the crab in the usual form, but .instead of the bolt through the crown ofthe arch, a slot or recess enters the crown at one side, for the reception of the bolt.
In the drawing-- A represents a crab ofthe general form in common use, and having a recess, d, entering its crown from one sidefor the reception of the bolt projecting outwardly from the hand-hole plate.
It will readily be seen that, in order to remove a.
plate from a hand-hole, it isnot necessary to remove the nut from the bolt, and the crab subsequently, as a couple turns of the nut enables the crabvto be withdrawn from the nut in a lateral direction, effecting a considerable saving in` time and labor, where several plates are to be removed or replaced, and preventing the loss of the nuts.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure 'by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of a hand-hole plate, A, provided with a recess, a, as and for the purpose set forth.
