To @ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN J. VIELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Virginia, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Cuspidor, of which the following is aA specification.

This invention relates to cuspidors, its

object being to provide a sanitary device of this character which4 is .provided with a top normally closed, simple means being provided whereby the top can be easily moved to open posit-ion so as to expose the receptacle of the cuspidor.

A further object is to provide a cuspidor receptacle which can be easily removed for the purpose of cleaning it.

Another object is to provide improved means for sealing the receptacle when the cover is closed.

Another object is to provide simple foot actuated means for operating the closure..

IVith the foregoing and other objects in view whichwill appear asV the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departin from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, l designates a casing adapted to be secured to or merely rest upon a floor or other structure, the top of this casing being formed with an opening 2 having spaced recesses 3 in the wall thereof. A cup-like receptacle 4 is adapted to fit within the .opening 2 and has a supporting flange 5 disposed annularly at its upper end and adapted, to bear downwardly on the top of the casing l. The recesses 3 extend beyond the flange so as thus to permit said flange to be grasped readily by any suitable tool provided for the purpose of lifting the receptacle out of the casing. l

A slot 6 is formed in one wall of the casing 1 and extending therethrough is atongue 7 provided upon the middle portion of a yoke 8. This tongue is pivotally connected as at 9, to ears 10 extending forward from the casing and constitutes a foot lever. The

sides of the yoke S are arched, as at 11 and secured to thesexarched portions are springs 12 which project downwardly from the yoke and are secured at their lower ends to the casing 1. These springs thus serve normally to pull downwardly on the yoke and thus to hold the foot lever or tongue 7 normally elevated. The rear ends of the yoke 8 are pivotally connected to links 18, these links extending loosely through openings 14 in the, top of casing 1 close to the sides and back thereof.

A closure 14 is hingedly connected as at 15, to the back of casing 1 and has a recess 16 in its inner or bottom face. Ears 17 or the like extend from this closure and are pivotally engaged by the links 13. A disk 18 is mounted loosely in the recess 16 and is adapted to slide upon a centering pin 19 mounted in the center of the closure 14. A spring 2O extends around this pin and is interposed between closure 14 and disk 18 and serves to press the disk normally toward the 'inner or lower end of the pin 19, there being a receiving nut 21 or the like for holding the disk 18 against displacement. Said disk carries a gasket 22 of rubber or other suitable material. It is to be understood that under normal conditions the yoke 8 is drawn downward by springs 12 and, there-y fore, the links 13 pull downwardly on ears 17 and cause the closure 14 to bear downwardly 'on the casing 1. V'Vhen the closure is thus positioned, the gasket 22 bearsv on the upper end of the receptacle 4 and thus i places spring 2O under compression. Gasket 22 bears tightly againstthe receptacle 4 and thus thoroughly seals it under normal conditions.

Vhcn it is desired .to use the cuspidor, the tongue or lever 7 is depressed by the foot of the user and this causes springs 12 to be elongated and the links 13 to push upwardly against ears 17. Thus closure 14 will be swung .upwardly and backwardly, thereby exposing the receptacle Q c ine-eme like whereby the cover een be held in` open position if desired.
