Letters Patent No. 105,178, 'dated July 12, 187 0; fmledatecl .Tune 30,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN THILL-COUPLING-S.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part Of the same bolt, and which parts are uncoupled by changing the usual relative positions of the axle-headand thill-iron,
Fand consists in the specific combination of the various parts ofthe coupling.
1n the drawing- Figure 1 represents aplan view of the coupling complete; l 'i' I y l Figure 2, a side elevation of the axle-head, and a plan view of the 4thill-iron; I
Figure 3, a central longitudinal section ofthe coupling; v
Figure 4, a transverse longitudinal section; and
Figures 5 and 6, views of diierentforxns of ,rollers. v l j l 'Io enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Vwill now'proceed to describev fully its construction and operation. d
A represents the axle-head or clip-strap, provided with the ring a, the upper part of which latter is cut away upon each side, as shown, to form the recesses a al.
B represents the thill-iron, provided with the ears b I), having the projections bl b1, as shown.
C represents a roller, provdedwith the depressions c c, which correspond in form and size with the projections bl bl;
his roller may be provided, if desired, withthc lugs b2 l, as shown, but this is not essential.
The operation is as follows:
rIhe roller O is first inserted in the eye of ring a.
4come detached, except by design.
If the roller is provided with lugs ll, the4 eye of the ring must be formed with a beveled edge, in order to permit the roller freelyto revolve. The upper part of the ring, also at a?, must be cut away beneath, to permit the passage of the lug when the roller 1s lnserted.
When thus inserted in the ring, it is turned around in the latter until its depressions are located in line below the recesses a1 al.
The projections b1 l)l are now placed in the depressions, and the thill-iron is brought down into place. lVhen properly constructed, the roller C should fit snug- 'ly wit-hin the eye of ring a, in order to prevent unneccessary play.- The projections b1 ll also should accurately t the depressions in the roller, and the ears b b the sides ofthe ring a, for the same purpose.
The relative location of the recesses/q.1 al to the other parts of the ring is not essential. They may be soplaced as to require the thill-iron to be raised to any desired height, in order to enter therein.
By this construction a simple coupling is produced, which cannot readily get out ot' order, and cannot be- VIt may be constructed of any suitable material, and it may be applied to coupling-rods in steam-engines, or to any other purpose for which it is adapted.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I 'claim as new, and desire to secure by.
This specification signed and witnessed this 22d day of November, 1869. Y
l PETER S. CRAWFORD.
