DE ALTON GARDNER, OF PLYMOUTH, WVISCONSIN.
ROLLER FOR GATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,708, dated July '7, 1835.
Application filed April 30, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DE ALTON GARDNER, of Plymouth, in the county of Sheboygan, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheaves or Rollers for Gates, 8rd; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in rollers and for hanging swinging farm-gates, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a farm-gate fitted with my improved roller. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center of the roller, taken on the line :10 a; of Fig. 7. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the central part of my roller, showing the manner of looking it on its stem. Fig. 4 is a like view of the locking-washer. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are, respectively, aperspeetive, alongitudinal section on line 3/ y, and an end elevation of the roller-stem detached from the other parts of my device.
A is the farm-gate; B, the roller, and 0 the fence-post to which the roller is fastened. This latter is composed of two circular disks, B B each of which is provided on each side of its outer rim with a flange, b, the inner part of the flange of one disk resting against the corresponding part of the other, while the outer part of said flange is extended out at right angles in both disks, so that when these latter are brought together there is formed around the roller a doubleflanged groove in which slides the lower edge of the rail A of the gate. The disk B has a flange, b projecting on each side of its inner rim, and a similar but slightly thicker flange, 6 is formed on each side also of the inner rim of the disk B. The inner part of this flange projects slightly beyond the edge of the corresponding flange, b, and a recess, b, is formed in said part of flange I) wherein fits the inner edge of flange 6 The stem D of the roller is composed of two parts the stem proper, D, and the screw-bolt D, to which it is hinged. The circularly-formed head d of the screw-bolt is perforated and inserted in the bifurcated end d of the stem D, which is also perforated to receive the hinging-pin (1 secured in place by means of the ring-key d The body of the stem proper is made slightly smaller than its bifurcated end,
(ModeL) the inner part of this latter forming a shoulder, (2, against which the outer edge of the flange b of the disk B works loosely. Another shoulder is formed at (F, and when the parts are put together, as shown in Fig. 2, this shoulder d projects slightly beyond the outer edge of the flanged inner rim of the disk B". Beyond this shoulder d the outer end of the stem is cylindrical, and of less diameter than elsewhere, except that the extreme outer edge of the periphery of the stem is provided with two ratchet shaped flanges, d", from the points at to the points (1, at diametrically-opposite points, while from the end d of one flange to the beginning (1 of the other there is no increase in thickness of the said periphery, for which reason neither flange is seen in Fig. 2, the section line not striking either flange in its course. These flanges d are substantially wed ge-shaped in thicknessthat is, they are thickest at the point (1, and gradually taper or grow thin as they approach the point d, as shown in Fig. 5. Between these ratchetshaped flanges and the shoulder d fits the locking-washer E. The opening of this washer is made to correspond to the variously-eurved outlines of the stem at the outer end, being made slightly larger, however, to allow of its readily slipping over it beyond the ratchet-shaped flanges d of the same. The upper face of the washer is slightly raised at the points 6 e, from which it is beveled down toward the opposite end, this beveled face being designed to jam against the inner wedgeshaped face of theflanges d as the curving edges 6 6 will do when, on turning the washer to the right, they come in contact with the wedge;
shaped inner faces of the ratchet-flanges d whereby the washer is securely locked between said flanges and the shoulder d of the stem.
My gate-roller possesses a marked advantage over the gate-rollers heretofore patented and in common use, wherein the two circular flanged disks are either cast solidly together, or, if separately cast, are bolted or otherwise held together.
My disks are capable of independent rotation, so that if (as frequently happens) in rolling one of the disks should become wedged against the bar of the gate which slides thereon, so that it cannot readily move, the other disk would be free to revolve, and thus the gatebar would be carried along by the independent rotation of the unobstructed disk, until the obstacle was removed, (which obstacle might be a little ice or snow in winter, or dirt or a pebble, or even a swelling or splinter on the gate-ham) and this capability of independeut rotation of the two disks is a marked improvement in the art, and a most valuable feature of my present invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A roller for swinging farm-gates, consisting of two circular-flanged disks rotating on a common-hinged stem and held together in place thereon by means of a locking-washer fitting between the flanged end of said stem and the outer disk, substantially as set forth.
2. In a roller for swinging farnrgates, the
flanged circular disks B B, in combination with the bearing-stem D, having bifurcated end (1, shoulders d and d, and flanges d (F, and the washer E, having beveled lockingedgcs adapted to impinge against the wedgeshaped inner surfaces of the flanges d d, between said flanges and the shoulder d of the stem D, substantially as set forth.
3. In a roller for swinging farm-gates, the combination, with a bearing-stem, of two circular-flanged disks, adapted for independent rotation thereon, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Viscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
DE ALTON GARDNER.
