CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1913.
Application filed March 4, 1912. Serial No. 681,627.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MARIUs A. MAncUooI, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan of the city of New York, State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Containers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
The object of the present invention is to provide a holder which may be readily attached to the outside of a door or window, and which, while the door or window remains closed, will be effectually locked against actual removal as well as against being opened.
Many devices are in use in connection with which it is necessary to use a key and lock or other means extraneous to the holder itself.
The present invention, however, has to do particularly with a device adapted to receive a bottle of milk, or other similar article and hold the same without danger of its being removed unless the door or window to which the device is attached be opened.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View with the fastening means partly in cross section showing the device in locked position as attached at the top of a door. Fig. 2 is a view from the rear. Fig. 3 is a front view of the device as attached to the front of a door at one side, and, Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the retaining jaw.
Referring now to the drawings, 2 represents a container or hollow member having slots 3 and 4 adapted to engage headed projections 1 fastened to a door 6. When the door is open this hollow member 2 is slid into position on the headed projections 1 and when the door is closed, one end of the hollow member is brought into contact with or such close proximity to a fixed casing or door jamb 5 as to prevent removal of the container in the direction from which it was slid into engagement. Thus the hollow member is locked upon the door while the latter is closed and may be removed at will or opened as desired when the door is open. A jaw shaped member 7 having a shank 9 is slidably arranged in a housing 10. A pin 11 passing transversely through the shank 9 and engaging the ends of a slot 12 in the housing limits the backward and forward movement of the shank in the housing. On
the inner end of the shank '9 is a flange 13 which, when the jaw 7 is pushed inward, bears down upon a spring member 15 and engages a shoulder 14 of the said spring member, the parts here mentioned constituting a locking mechanism for the jaw 7. A second jaw 8 pivotally connected with the jaw 7 at 16 is provided with a spur 17 which, when an object is pressed against it, causes the jaws to close and at the same time presses them back toward the housing and into locked position. It being obvious that the jaws may become locked inadvertently, a means is provided to disengage the flange 13 from the shoulder 14. This means consists preferably of an arm 18 mounted on a rod 19 which rotates in a sleeve 21 the free end of the arm being arranged to press down upon a free end 20 of the spring 15 thus disengaging the flange 13 from the shoulder 14. A flat cap 22 attached to the outer end of the rod 19 serves as a lever arm by which to rotate the said rod, and also serves as a cover to protect the contents of an article such as a milk bottle 23 which may be locked in the jaws of the device. The arm 18 is provided with a yielding projection 24 which presses against the inner end of the shank 9 as the end of the arm 18 traverses the free end 2O of the spring and forces the shank outwardly when the disengagement of the spring and shank is effected. Thus, in the case where the present invention is fastened to a door and adapted to receive a milk bottle or the like, the device is left with the jaws in open relation, the jaw 8 taking the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4. If the device is tampered with and locked before a bottle is placed therein, it may be unlocked by twisting the cap 22 and Vis then open as before. The neck of a bottle may now be inserted between the jaws and pressed against the spur 17 which action causes the jaws to lock against the neck of the bottle and the cap 22 being close to the top of the bottle is prevented from being twisted thus rendering it impossible to remove the bottle until the door upon which the device is fastened has been opened.
The form of the present invention and its operation may vary considerably as for example; it is immaterial whether the device be fastened to the door or to the casing of the door-way or whether, in other words, to the movable part of the door or to the fixed part.
The apparatus may be used equally well when attached to a window or its casing, the window sill here beingthe lixed member and the sash the movable member.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a bottle holder, the combination of a device to retain a bottle, a latch therefor, a housing to make the latch inaccessible, and means movable and accessible from the eX terior of the housing to disengage the latch, said means being so located with reference to said device that the insertion of a bottle in said device keeps said means from moving to release the latch.
2. In a bottle holder, the combination of a device to ret-ain a bottle, a latch therefor, a
housing to make the latch inaccessible from the side upon which said device is located, a sleeve secured to the housing above said device, and means rotatable in said sleeve to 20 In testimony whereof, I have signed my 25 name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
