WILLIAM P. BICKLEY, OF FAR-MERSVILLE, TEXAS.
LOOSELEAF BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented Jan. 28, 1913.
Application filed July 10, 1912. Serial No. 708,720.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, TWILLIAM l). BIcnLEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Farmersville, in the county of Collin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose- Leaf Binders, of which the followingl is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders and has as it object to provide, in a binder of this type, a novel leaf post so constructed that its sections may be readily and quickly adjusted so as to lengthen or shorten the post and may, without the use of keys, or the like, be firmly locked at adjustment.
The invention also has as its object to provide in aloose leaf binder, a leaf post consisting of but two sections which may be readily adjusted so as to lengthen or shorten the post as a whole and which may be locked at adjustment merely by the rotation of one section with relation to the other.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view' of the binder embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view in detail through the back of the binder and one of the leaf supporting posts. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the stationary post section. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the adjustable post section. Fig. 5 is a view in elevation illustrating the sections assembled.
Correspondng and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
In the drawing the reference letter A indicates in general one cover of the binder and B the other cover. The cover A consists preferably of a sheet 1 of heavy cardboard or paste-board, although it may be of other material, and a covering 2 which may be of cloth, leather, or the like. This cover 2 extends over the edges of the sheet 1 and at the back of the binder is extended as at 3 over a strip 4 disposed for the greater portion of its length against the inner face of the sheet 1. This strip 4 and the engaging portion of the sheet 3 are formed with openings 5 and 6 respectively, which register and which receive the stationary posts of the binder, as will be`presently explained.
The cover B includes a sheet 7 corresponding to the sheet 1 which is covered by a sheet 8 corresponding to the sheet 2 and these sheets at the back of the binder are formed with an opening 9 to receive the posts of the binder.
Each post of the binder includes a fixed section and a section adjustable with respect thereto. The fixed section consists of a base 10 preferably of relatively thin sheet metal which is disposed between the inner face of the sheet 1 and the strip 4 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A post section 11 projects upwardly from the center of the base 10 and through the openings 5 and 6. This post section 11 is in the form of a sheet metal sleeve which is elliptical. in cross-section and is formed with slot 12. lt will be noted by referring to F ig. 8 of the drawing that the slot 12 is not located, strictly speaking at either side of the ellipse defined by the sleeve in crosssection, nor at either end thereof, but at a point where one side and one end of the ellipse merge. It will also be observed that this slot extends directly longitudinally of the sleeve and from one end thereof to the other.
Each adjustable section of the post ccnsists of a head 13 which may be circular, square, or of any other desired contour, and an elliptical sleeve 14 projects axially from the head 13, as in the case of the sleeve of the fixed post sections and is formed with a slot 15 which extends from end to end thereof and is located in the same position on the ellipse described by the sleeve in crosssection as is the slot 12.
In using the binder, the sheets to be held are disposed upon the lixed post section 11 and the cover B is disposed upon the sheets with the lixed post sections projecting through the openings 9 therein. The post sections 14 are then inserted into the upper open ends of the post sections 11 with the ellipse defined by the post sections, in crosssection, coinciding, after which the heads 13 of the adjustable post sections are turned through an are of about 90O so as to rotate the sleeves 14 within the sleeves 11. This will result in the sleeve 14 being compressed to substantially circular form and the sleeves 11 expanded to circular form, the slot 15 being incidentally narrowed and the one 12 being widened or spread. The sections will in this manner be held by friction firmly at adjustment and against accidental separation.
The binder embodying the present invention is designed more particularly forV use with all of the leaves to be held supported upon the sleeves 1l but it will be understood, of course, that if it is necessary to employ more leaves than these sleeves will accommodate, then the post sect-ions 14 may be adjusted longitudinally in the post sections 11.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. In a loose leaf binder, a leaf post comprising tubular post sections, non-circular in cross section, one of the sections being fitted rotatably in the other, each section being formed with a longitudinally extending slot.
2. In a loose leaf binder, a cover, a strip disposed againstl one face of the cover and having an opening therein, a fixed leaf post section comprising a base confined between the strip and the said face of the cover, a tubular post projecting from the base and through the said opening in the strip, a second cover having an opening through which the post projects, and a second post section comprising a head having a tubular post projecting therefrom and rotatably fitted in the first mentioned post, the posts being non-circular in cross-section.
In testimony whereof I aihx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
