ABEL L. WEBSTER., OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Leners Patent No. 105,152, daad .my 5,1870.
IMPRO'V'EMEN'II IN SEAMS FOR CANS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABEL L. WEBSTER, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, liaveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Scams for Gans and other Vessels, of whichtlie following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had Y to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents sectional edge views of two adjacent plates or sectional portions of a can, shaped so that, when put together, they form a seam constructed in accordance with my improvement, and
Figure 2, a similar View of like parts after the same means of a U-shaped fold formed in the edge of the one plate or connecting section, outside of or beyond the exterior surface of said pla-te, and t of the edge of the other plate or connecting section, by shouldering it within said fold, and afterward soldeiing the seam along the mouth of 4the fold, the whole forming a cheap, simple, close, and strong seam.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents the one plate or connecting section of a can, and
B, the other plate or section thereof.
-The one plate, A, has its edge bent outward, and afterward turned to form a V-shaped fold, b, within which the `edge c of the adjacent plate B fits, as represented in tig. 2, after which the plates are pressed together at the joint thus formed, and the seain closed by soldering along the mouth of the fold at'd. This forms a very cheap and secure seam, and the same is considerably strengthened. by bending the edge c of the plate B to form a shoulder, e, which, lappingoverv the root of the fold b, bears against the inside surface of the plate A, and stili'ens the can or vessel.
What is here claimed, and desired t'o bevsecured by Letters Patent, is-
The jog' or shoulder e along the-edge'c of-the one plate B, in combination with the fold b along the edge of the adjacent plate A, within which the edge c of the plate B fits, essentially as shown and described.
ABEL L. WEBSTER.
