H; JAMES.
GALE WEANER. I APPLICATION FILED JULY 27, 1912.

CALF-WEANER.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1913.
Application filed July 27, 1912. Serial No. 711,868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rush Springs, in the county of Grady and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Oalf-VVeaner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to calf weaners, its object being to provide improved means for engaging the septum or dividing cart-ilage of the nose whereby the device is held against displacement and, while remaining in use as a weaner, will not prevent the calf from grazing.
Another object is to provide improved means for locking the nose engaging portion in place.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure l is a perspective view showing the weaner in position. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof, the nose engaging portions being locked against relative movement. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the structure with the parts positioned as in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the nose engaging portions unlocked and the weaner spread apart to the position assumed thereby while the device is placed in or removed from position. Fig. 5 is a section on line A-B Fig. 4.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a bowed plate constituting the body of the device and which is formed of metal capable of springing. Brackets 2 are riveted or otherwise secured to the inner face of the plate 1 adjacent opposite sides thereof and pivotally connected to these brackets are the ears 3 of oppositely disposed bowed jaws 4. having lapping arms 5 which are pivotally connected as at 6. Openings 7 are formed witlr 1n the lapping arms 5 and are adapted to register when the arms are in alinement so as thus to receive a cotter pin 8 or other suitable locking device which, when in position, serves to hold the arms 5 and the jaws l against relative movement. The free ends of the jaws are formed with knobs 9 so spaced that, when they, are in their normal positions, they will engage the septum or dividing cartilage of the nose of the calf and thus prevent the weaner from being pulled out of place. An opening 10 is formed in the plate 1 and may be covered with a strip of wire screen or netting, as shown at 11. The lower corners of the plate 1 may be 18. Obviously the device can be made of any desired shape.
In using the device the pin 8 is first moved after which the plate 1 is spread outwardly, as shown in Fig. at so as thus to cause the arms 5 to shift relative to each other and the'knobs 9 to move apart. The plate is then placed in position on the nose of the calf with the knobs 9 at opposite sides of the dividing cartilage of the nose. Plate 1 is then bent back to its initial state so as to lie close to the sides of the nose and this will cause the knobs 9 to move into the nostrils and against the dividing cartilage 0r septum. The pin 8 is then inserted into the registering openings 7 and, ob viously, the weaner thus becomes locked in place and, while being held against accidental displacement will, nevertheless, be capable of swinging upwardly about the knobs 9 as pivots, so not to interfere with grazing by the calf.
hat is claimed is A calf weaner including a bendable plate, opposed jaws pivotally connected thereto and having spaced terminals for engaging the dividing cartilage of the nose, there being pivotally connected arms integral with the jaws and having apertures adapted to register when said terminals are in engaging position, said arms being outof line with the pivots of the jaws, and a bent outwardly as shown at.
locking device insertible into the register- In testimony that I claim the foregoing ing apertures to fasten the jaws against as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signarelative movement, the pivotal eonnectipn tore in the presence of two witnesses. between the jaws being movable, when the HARRY JAMES.
