WASHBOILER-STRAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 21, 1913.
Application filed June 25, 1912. Serial No. 705,691.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful lVashboiler-Strainer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful combination strainer and ventilator for wash boiler covers.
As one of the objects of the invention, it is the aim, to provide a strainer having a slide member adapted to be opened, in case the water in the boiler boils over, in order to cool the same ofl'.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an especially constructed strainer carried by the cover of the boiler, for straining the water when poured into the boiler.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a strainer having an upstanding flange extending about substantially the entire edges thereof, to catch the overflow when the water in the boiler over-boils.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a boiler, showing the improved combination strainer and ventilator as applied to the cover thereof. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the boiler cover, showing the construction of the strainer. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail view showing how the guides and the upstanding flange are constructed at their corners, and as a part of the cover. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view showing how the slide is limited in its movement by the stops of the upstanding flange at one end portion of the cover. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the slide.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 designates a boiler, while 2 denotes the cover thereof, the same being constructed at 3 and 4 in the usual manner, to fit the boiler.
The cover of the boiler is provided with an opening 5, which is bounded or surrounded through substantially its entirety by the flange 6, which terminates upon each side of one end of the opening in an inwardly extending lateral flange extension 7 Soldered, riveted or otherwise secured to the flange 6 and to the lateral flange extensions 7 is a strip 8, which is folded upon itself, to form the double lateral flange 9 and the single lateral flange 10, so arranged as to form the guide space 11, for the reception of the slide 12. The lateral flanges 9 and 10 extend inwardly of the opening 5. The strip 8 is substantially continuous, in that it is constructed in sections, which are soldered together at 13, 1 1 and 15, to form the corners, or otherwise secured together. The longitudinal sections of the strip 8, at one end of each are recessed at 14: to receive the double lateral flange 9 of the end sections of the strip 8. By soldering leakage at the corners is prevented. The laterally extending portions 16 of the strip 8 correspond to the extensions 7 and are soldered or otherwise secured to said lateral flange extensions 7, and form stops 17 to be contacted with by the upstanding flange 18 of the slide, in order to limit the slide in its movement. In fact the sections of the strip 8 are entirely soldered or otherwise secured to the flange 6.
A very fine straining screen 19, for instance a 100 mesh screen or finer, is secured between the flange 10 and the continuous strip 20, by soldering or other means, thereby constituting means for straining the water, when poured into the boiler, the flange 6 and the strip 8 acting to prevent wasting of the water, or to prevent the loss of the water in the boiler when the same boils over.
The upstanding flange of the slide is struck up therefrom, as shown in the drawings. The slide is provided with a handle 21, while the cover is provided with a knob 22. When it is desired to open the slide to allow the water in the boiler to cool off, in case it boils over, the knob 22 may be grasped by the left hand, in order to steady the boiler, while the handle 21 is grasped by the right hand, after which the slide may be opened as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination, a wash boiler cover having a flanged opening, the flange of which is partially cut away at one end and terminates in a lateral extension, a strip corresponding in length to the flange and secured to it, stops formed where the strip and flange terminate, the strip being constructed with lateral guide flanges extending inwardly of the opening and forming a guide space, a slide slidably mounted in the guide space and having a flange at one end adapted to contact with the stops to limit the slide in its movement, a second continuous strip arranged adjacent one of the guide flanges, an area of straining screen secured between the 10 second strip and the adjacent guide flange,
the cover having a knob, While the slide is provided with a handle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE G. RUSSELL.
