Description

JULIUS E. MFRRIMAN,` OF
MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
SEWING-Bini).
Specification of Letters :Patent No.' y10,509, dated February 7, 1854.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JULES E. MERRIMAN, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing- Birds; and I dov hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l, shows a side elevation of one of my sewing birds as it appears when resting on the edge of a table-excepting that the screw, which secures it tothe table is not shown screwed up its full length. In this View my improved method of arranging the cushion under the bird is shown, also the manner of combining the spring tape measure with the bird and cushion. Fig. 2, shows a side elevation of a modification of my invention, wherein the tape measure is dispensed with and the cushion Linder the bird employed. Y
The same letters of kreference in each of the two figures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consistsy in employing in connection with the sewing bird, an ordinary spring tape line or measure, which is arranged in a hollow case o-f cylindrical form directly under the belly of the bird, and may have placed on its top (the case) if desired a neat handsome pin or needle cushion. The said tape measure and cushion being placed ina positionpmost convenient for use and where they will add greatly to the beauty of the sewing bird. The tape measure thus arranged Vand employed in connection with a sewing bird is very useful and convenient and will save considerable time and trouble-as the line is always at hand and can be used when wanted without leaving the seat, the sewing bird serving to hold the cloth and also the tape measure taut while either the sewing or measuring operations are being performed, whereas ifitwere used independent of the bird it requires another person to hold the line while measuring. e
To enable others to see more clearly the construction of my sewing bird I will give a more definite description of the same.'-
A, represents a portion of a ladys work table.
B designates the screw clamp for securing the sewing bird to the table A, in the` maner shown in the drawing Fig. l. This clamp has a vertical screw rest C, which extends some distance upward and has the bird I), screwed on it as shown in Fig. 1. This rest has a shoulder a, at its lower end on which the casel F, which contains the spring tape measure E, rests or is `sustained and prevented from turning. The .i y
tape line will bey seen drawn a short distanceout of the case in Fig. l. This linev is arranged in the case'` on a hollow drumV Y which is operated by a spiral spring ar-y ranged inside of it. This tape line is of great utility, when used in connection withl a sewing bird, tomilliners, dress makers and others performing sewing operations, as it can be so easily and conveniently used.A
G, 1s a neat handsome pin and needle cushion arranged on top the case F, and under the belly of the bird as seen inFig. 1. This position of the cushion is best suited to the position of the sewing lady and also adds greatly to the appearance of the sewing bird. Instead ofplacing the cushionV on top of the case containing the tape measure I may see fit sometimes to employ'a solidplate or flange Z2, Fig. 2 on thelrest and place the cushionon it-in this case the tape line will be left olf. I may also see lit to dispense with any cushion and o nly employ the tape line. i These alteral tions however will only take from the beauty and utility lof the sewing bird and are only to be made for the sake of economy and cheapness.
The bird may be made of white ivory and be sof constructed as to open its bills when` pressure 1s exerted on its tail and to close the bills when the pressure is withdrawn, and bite on the work, by means of a spring as shown in Fig. 1*, by dottedv lines.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V Employing in connection with a sewing bird, a spring tape measure, arranged in a case vplaced directly under the belly of the bird. The said case being so situated, that arranged on its inside and hid from view it may have if desired, a handsome pinr or y needle cushion placed on its top. This ar rangement rendering thefsewing bird .capaf ble of measuring as well as holding the Cloth while the ysewing or measuring voperations are being performed, and it also makes it more convenient for use, and ornamental iin its design as herein fully set forth.
