To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN T. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifton, in the District of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursery-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to whlch it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to nursery chairs.

The object of the invention resides in the provision of a chair of the character named for use in traveling with children which can be folded up into an exceedingly small space for transportation, and which will efficiently serve the purposes for which it is intended and present a neat and desirable appearance.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out 1n the appended claims.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views; and in which,

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention with the parts thereof in their normal or assembled relation; Fig. 2, a rear view of what is shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view of the invention in a folded state; Fig. 4:, a section on the line H of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a front view of the invention showing an intermediary position assumed by the side members during a movement of the back from folded position, the leg sections being in folded position; Fig. 6, a detail perspective view showing the application and use of the locking device for securing the back against movement from assembled to folded position; and Fig. 7, a detail perspective view showing the application and use of the locking device for securing the leg sections against movement from assembled to folded position.

Referring to the drawings, the invention is shown as comprising a seat 10, to the rear edge of which is hingedly connected a back 11 adapted to fold upon the upper face of the seat 10. This back 11 is provided with a pair of longitudinal slots 12 and 13 disposed respectively adjacent the side edges Specification of Letters Patent.

of said back. Secured to each of the side edges of the seat 10 and projecting above the upper face thereof are strips 14. and 15 which are adapted to be disposed in the slots 12 and 13 respectively when the back 11 is folded upon the upper face of the seat 10. Hingedly connected to each of the strips 14 and 15 are side members 16 and 17 respectively, said side members being adapted for movement toward each other so as to fold upon the back 11 when the latter is positioned upon the upper face-of the seat 10. As the side members when moved to their normal or assembled position, lie in the same vertical plane with the strips 14 and 15 respectively, it will be apparent that upon the movement of the back 11 from folded position, said side members will pass respectively through the slots 12 and 13. The strips 14 and 15 so position the side members 16 and 17 with respect to the upper or rear face of the back 11 when the latter is in folded position that said side members are free to fold inwardly and fall flat upon said back. l/Vhen the side members are in this last named position, it will be apparent that upon the back 11 being moved from folded position, the side members 16 and 17 will be gradually shifted by contact of the back therewith to a position in the same vertical plane with the strips 14 and 15. When the side members 16 and 17 are folded upon the back 11, they lie wholly without the slots 12 and 13 respectively. However, when the back and side members are moved to assembled position, the rear edges of said side members are disposed in said slots whereby they are held against movement to folded position by the engagement with the inner walls of the slots.

The movement of the back 11 away from folded position is limited by means of L shaped stops 18 secured respectively to the rear edges of the side members 16 and 17. One arm of each of these stops projects inwardly of the side members into the path of travel of the back 11 and is engaged by the back when the latter assumes substantially a vertical position with respect to the seat. The other arm of each of these stops 18 is offset so as to lie in spacement from the rear edge of the respective side members, and latch members 19 are pivotally connected to each side of the back 11 in position to be swung into the space between the offset arms of the stops 18 and the adjacent inner edges of the respective side members 16 and 17. These latch members 19 when disposed between the ofiset arms of the stops l8 and the inner edges of the respective side members serve to lock the back 11 against movement toward folded position.

Hinged to the lower face of the seat 10 at each side of the latter are leg sections A, each of which includes spaced leg portions 20 and a connecting portion 21 securing said leg portions together. These leg sections A are adapted to fold upon the lower face of the seat 10 and when the leg portions 20 are so positioned as to lie entirely without an opening 22 formed in the seat 10. In order to secure the leg sections A against movement to folded position, there is mounted upon each outer side face of the strips 14 and 15 a locking pin 23, while a hook member 24 is pivoted on the outer face of each of the connecting portions 21 of the leg sections in position to operatively engage the locking pin 23. When this locking pin 23 is engaged by the hook member 24:, it will be apparent that the leg sections A are locked against movement to folded position.

What is claimed is 1. A nursery chair comprising a seat, a back hinged to said seat and foldable upon the upper face thereof, said back having longitudinal slots therein adjacent each side edge, side members hinged to said seat and positioned to pass through said slots respectively during the movements of the back from one of its limiting positions to the other, said side members being disposed entirely without said slots when the back is in folded position, whereby they may be folded upon said back, and leg sections hinged to the seat and foldable across the lower face of the latter.

2. A nursery chair comprising a seat, a back hinged to said seat and foldable upon the upper face thereof, said back having longitudinal slots therein adjacent each side edge, ribs mounted on the upper face of the seat adapted to enter respective slots in the back when the latter'is folded upon the seat, side members hinged to said ribs and adapted to pass through said slots respectively during the movements of the back from one of its limiting positions to the other, said ribs having a depth substantially equal to the thickness of the back whereby the side members are disposed entirely without said slot when the back is in folded position to permit them to be folded upon the back, and leg sections hinged to the lower face of the seat and foldable across the latter.

3. A nursery chair comprising a seat, a back hinged to said seat and foldable upon the upper face thereof, said back having longitudinal slots therein adjacent each side edge, side members hinged to said seat and positioned to pass through said slots respectively during the movements of the back from one of its limiting positions to the other, an angle plate secured to the rear edge of each of said sidemembers having one arm extending inwardly of the side member for engagement with the back to limit the movement of the latter away from folded position, and its other arm extending contiguous with the rear edge of the side member with its free end offset and disposed in spaced relation to the rear edge, an arm pivoted to the rear face of the back at each side and positioned for movement across the rear ecge of respective side members into the space between the latter and the offset portion of the angle plate, and leg sections hinged to the seat and foldable across the lower face of the latter.
