To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PERCY S. CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mountpleasant, in the county of Maury, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursery- Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in nursery chairs, and consists in certain novel con structions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a chair of the character specified which may be folded into a flat condition and which, when set up, will be firmly locked in such position.

Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement, showing it set up; Fig. 2 is a similar View, showing it partly knocked down; Fig. 3 is a vertical section; Fig. 4 is a similar View at right angles to F ig. 3; Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a perspective View, showing the chair completely folded.

The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings consists of a seat 1 having a circular opening 2 therein for use as a commode, and a back?) to which the seat is hinged by its rear edge, as at 22, and to each side edge of the back near its lower end is hinged a side plate by means of hinges 5. Each of the side plates consists of a body portion 4, which is cut away at its lower end to form legs 6, and is recessed at its rear edge, as at 7, to receive the edge of the back. Each side plate is also provided with an opening 8 therethrough and the upper front corner is also recessed or notched, as at 9, the side wall of the recess being undercut, as at 10. The side plates are provided on their inner faces in front of the openings 8, and in line therewith, with brackets consisting of a body portion 11 and legs 12, and the brackets are secured to the side plates by screws or nails 13, and the under face of the seat at each edge is provided with a plate 14 secured to the seat and having a lateral flange 15 for engaging the adjacent bracket.

It will be evident that the above mechanism comprises a loop, the bracket, and a catch, the flange for engaging the loop.

A frame consisting of a tray 16 and arm 17 is connected with the chair, the ends of the arms being slotted, as at 18, and pivotally secured to the back by means of pins 19, traversing the slots and engaging the back. The inner edge of-the tray at its ends is recessed, as at 21, to fit over the undercut wall of the recess 10, whereby to lock the parts together.

)Vhen the chair is set up the frame is swung from the dotted line position in Fig. 3 to the full line position in the same figure, and the engagement of the recessed ends 21 with the undercut wall of the recess of the side plate (1) restrains the upward (2) ioveinent of the frame, and since the frame encircles the chair all the parts are retained firmly in position. dotted line position of Fig. 3, and folded up against the back. The side plates are then folded onto the seat, and the frame is folded, as shown in Fig. 6. It will be observed from an inspection of Fig. 2 that one of the recesses 7 is of greater depth than the other and the back at its edges is provided with flanges 23, of different thicknesses to which the plates are hinged, so that one side plate may be folded evenly upon the other, and the arms of the frame are of such length that the back fits between the arms, the end of the back abutting the tray.

It will be observed from an inspection of the drawings, that the slots in the arms of the swinging frames are enlarged on their upper sides and their front ends, which provides an eflicient lock for the pins to prevent rearward movement of the frame.

When the chair is set up as above described, and the frame is placed in position encircling the chair, the rear ends of the arms are depressed so that the pins engage the enlarged portions of the slots, thus preventing disengagement of the tray from the undercut notches, until the rear ends of the arms are again lifted to disengage the pins.

I claim:

1. A chair of the character specified, comprising a back, a seat hinged thereto, a side plate hinged to each side edge of the back, said plates being recessed to receive said edge, the recess of one plate being of greater depth than the other, and the edge of the back adjacent to said recesses having a flange to which the plate is hinged, a lug near each and to the other side edge, each of said side plates havlng at 1ts upper front corner an undercut notch, a loop on each of said plates below the notch, a seat hinged to the back, catches on the seat for engaging the loops, and a swinging frame comprising armshinged to the sides of the back and a body portion having undercut edges for engaging the undercut notches.

A chalr of the character specified, com- .prising a back having at one side edge a lateral flange, side plates hinged to the flange and to the other side edge, each of said side plates having at its upper front corner an undercut notch, a loop on each of said plates below the notch, a seat hinged to the back, catches on the seat for engaging the loops, a swinging frame pivoted to the back and encircling the chair, and means for locking the frame in place. 7

A chair of the character specified, comprising a back having at one side edge a lateral flange, side plates hinged to the flange and to the other side edge, each of said side plates having at its upper front corneran undercut notch, a loop on each of said plates below thenotch, a seat hinged to the back,

catches on the seat for engaging the loops, and a swinging frame pivoted to the back and encircling the chair.

5. A chair of the character specified, comprising a back having at one side edge a lateral flange, side plates hinged to the flange and to the other side edge, a seat hinged to the back, means for securing the seat and the side plates together, and a swinging frame hinged to the back and encircling the chair.

A chair of the character specified, comprising aback, a side plate hinged to each side of the back and foldable thereon, a seat hinged to the back, means in connection with the seat and together, a swinging frame pivoted to the back and encircling the chair when set up, and means in connection with the frame and side plates for locking the frame in place.

7 A chair of the character specified, comprising a back, a side plate hinged to each side of the back and foldable thereon, a seat hinged to the back, means in connection with the seat and the side plates for locking them together, and a swinging frame pivoted to the back and encircling the chair when set up.

8. A folding chair comprising a back, a seat foldable thereon, side plates foldable on the seat in superimposed relation, means for locking the seat to the side plates when the chair is set up, and a frame pivoted to the back and encircling the chair for retaining it in set up position.
