FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 21, 1920.
Application filed May 17, 1920. Serial No. 381,885.
To all 20 [mm at may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. ZAKVZEWSKI, citizen of the United States, residing at Fullerton, in the county of Nance and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chairs and has for an object the provision of a chair which is capable of use in the ordinary manner, and of being folded so as to occupy a small space for storage and shipment.
Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of novel means for holding the chair against accidental folding and of preventing its accidental unfolding.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection withthe accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation showing the chair in open position.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the chair closed.
Fig. at is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of one of the combined locking hooks and links.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the chair is shown as comprising a back 10 which includes side members 11, the latter being extended to form rear legs 12. Hingedly secured to the side members 11 through the medium of the hinges 13 is a seat 14 which is capable of being folded upwardly against the back 10.
Hingedly secured to the bottom of the seat lt as shown at 15 are front legs 16, the hinges being secured to the rear face of these legs at their upper end so that when. the chair is open the bottom of the seat will rest directly upon the upper ends of these legs. The front and rear legs of the seat of the chair are connected by rungs 16, one end of these rungs being connected to the front legs by hinges 17 secured to the under face of the rungs, while their opposite ends are connected to the rear legs by hinges 1 8 to the upper faces of the rungs. By this means, when the seat is foldedagamst the back, the front legs will lie against the bottom of the seat and the rungs 16 below said seat against the rear legs 12 so as to form a compactly folded chair. Both the front and rear legs are connected by rungs 19 which are rigidly secured in position and serve to brace the legs; 7
Que of the novel features ofthe invention resides in the provision of means for bold ing the chair in both opened and closed position and for this purpose there is pivotally connected to the opposite side edges of the seat 14 as shown at 20, one end of a link 21. The opposite end of this link is in turn pivotally connected as shown at 22 to one end of a link 23 and this last mentioned link is pivoted to the side members 11 of the back as shown at 2%. The link 23 is provided at one end with an arm 25, the latter having one end connected to the upper edge of the link 23 and extending across a space formed by the said link to provide for the reception of the link 21 when the chair is in open position. In this position the arm 25 and the adjacent end of the link 23 embraces the link 21 and as the pivot 22 which extends adjacent the ends of the links has been moved below a line drawn through the center of the pivots 20 and 24:, the links are held against relative pivotal movement.
For the purpose of holding the chair folded, the arm 25 is extended and provided with a notch 26, this notch being so located that when the chair is in folded position it will lie along the bottom edge of the seat and be positioned in engagement with pivoted latches 27 which operate in recesses 28 provided in the bottom of the chair seat.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, that the invention provides a chair which may be easily opened or folded and when in either position will be securely held against accidental opening or folding.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the s ope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A folding chair comprising a back having legs extending rigidly therefrom, a seat hingedly secured to the rear legs, and front legs each hingedly secured to the seat and capable of folding against the bottom thereof, side rungs having their opposite ends hingedly connected. to the front and rear legs, a link having one end pivotally seemed to the side edge of the chair seat, a link having one end pivotally secured to the side edge. of the chainhack, a pivot connecting the adjacent ends of the link, an arm carried by and spaced from the end of the pivot carried link. a hook formed in the extremity of the arm and a latch pivoted to the loottom ofthe chair seat for engagement with said hook.
2. A folding chair comprising a back having legs extending rigidly therefrom, a seat hingedly secured to the rear legs, front legs each hingedly secured to the seat and capable of folding against the bottom thereof, side rungs having their opposite ends hingedly connected to the front and rear legs, pivotally connected links having their outer ends pivotally secured to the seat and back of the chair, a latch carried by the chair and means extending from one of the links to provide a stop When the chairis open and for engagement with the latch when the chair is closed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN s. ZAKZEWSKI.
