MAGAZINE SMOKING-PIPE.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, JOHN WV. CRUMF. and A'rwELL AUSTIN, of the United States, residing at Stillwater, in the count-y of Payne and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Magazine Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to magazine smoking pipes, and has for an object to provide a pipe with a magazine wherein the pipe and the tobacco or smokable product can be carried as one package, the construction being such that the bowl of the pipe can be readily and quickly filled at the will of the user.

Another object of the invention is to provide a magazine pipe wherein the bottom of the bowl forms a closure for the magazine when the bottom is in one position, whereby to cut-off communication between the bowl and the magazine to prevent the tobacco in the latter from accidentally taking re.

In the drawing, forming' a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views Figure 1 is a vertical section through a pipe showing the bottom of the bowl adjusted to form a closure for the magazine of the pipe. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bottom adjusted to establish communication between the bowl and the magazine and to thereby permit the tobacco in the magazine to be conveyed to the bowl. Fig. 3 is a section through the bowl of the pipe showing a slight modification thereof.

1n the preferred embodiment of the invention the pipe comprises a bowl 1 which may be of any suitable obvious configuration or construction which may be found valuable or advantageous to the use of the article. The magazine comprises a horizontally disposed chamber 2 in which a quantity of tobacco sufficient to fill the bowl several times may be placed. This chamber may have its walls formed as an integral part of the bowl 1, or as is obvious, the chamber may be made as a detachable part of the bowl without departing from the spirit of the invention. This chamber is also preferably formed as an integral part of the stem 3. The stem 3 is provided with a smoke channel or bore 4 which opens at one end into the bowl 1. by communication is established between the chamber and the bowl. The bowl 1 is provided with a plug 5. The bowl 1 is elongated and the plug 5 is constructed whereby it can be freely adjusted t-o the position shown in Fig. 1 to close communication between the bowl and said chamber for a purpose to be hereinafter described. `When the plug is in this position the upper edge or surface thereof is disposed slight-ly below the smoke duct or bore 4L. When the plug 5 is in the position shown in Fig. 2 the upper edge thereof will be disposed below the plane of the discharge end of the magazine chamber '2, whereby the latter and the bowl are in open communication to permit the bowl to be supplied with a charge of tobacco. With a view to holding the plug 5 in its adjusted position, as shown in Fig. 1, we thread the same at 6. This threaded portion is adapted to engage with the thread 7 on the interior walls of the bowl. The threads 7 and 8 project beyond the inner walls of the pipe bowl and the threads 6 are formed on that portion of the plug 5 whose diameter exceeds the diameter of the other portions of the plug whereby to effect the proper adjustments of the plug` and its connection with the threads 7 and 8 as desired. 1When the plug is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the threads 6 are engaged with the similar threads 8 on the interior walls of the bowl. To facilitate the adjustment of the plug to the various positions described, we provide the same with a knurled manipulating knob 9.

The outer end of the chamber 2 is closed by a plug 10. This plug has a recess 11 formed therein which is designed to receive the keeper pin 12 on the springy member 18, the latter being secured to the walls of the chamber 2 in any suit-able Well known manner. A follower 14 is located in the chamber and it is designed under the influence of the extensile spring 15 to bear against the tobacco so that sufficient pressure is exerted thereagainst to cause a quantity of the tobacco to be discharged into the bowl 1 when desired. The plug 10 and the follower 1e are preferably secured at. 16, to the spring 15, whereby when the plug is removed the follower and the spring will be carried therewith. The stem 3 is connected with a mouthpiece, such as that shown at 17.

ln the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 the plug 18 of the bowl is iXedly secured, at 19, to a sliding member 20. rlhis member is mounted in a suitable guide 2l upon the exterior of the bowl. rlhe member is provided with notches 22 which are adapted to interchangeably receive the guide, whereby the plug can be readily held in either of its adjusted positions.

Having described the essential details of the article itis said that the capacit-y of the chamber 2 exceeds the capacity of the bowl l so that the latter can be supplied with a number of charges of tobacco on one iilling of the magazine chamber. Vthen plug 5 of the pipe is adjusted to open communication between the bowl and the magazine chamber the tobacco in the lat-ter will be moved under the oi'lice of the followerl lll and conveyed to the bowl. After this operation the plug 5 of the bowl is adjusted to cause its upper surface to lie wholly below the plane of the smoke duct or bore et and also to a. position to securely close the discharge end of the magazine chamber. lt is now seen that the tobacco in the bowl may be lighted and the pipe used as in the well known manner. lt is of course understood that when the plug is adjusted in an upward direction the tobacco will be carried therewith and the charge of the tobacco admitted to the bowl will then be suilicient to substantially till that part of the bowl between the top thereof and the upper surface of the plug 5.

We claim:

l. A pipe including a bowl having a chamber for containing a smolable product, a stem carried by the bowl and disposed above the chamber and having a smoke duct opening directly into the bowl, a plug adjustably mounted in the bowl and adapted in one position to lie wholly below the plane of the smoke passage and to cover the discharge end of the magazine chamber and adapted when adjusted to another position to uncover the discharge end of the said magazine chamber, and a movable follower located in the chamber and bearing against the smokable product so as to force a quantity of the product into the bowl on one position of the said plug.

2. A pipe including a bowl having a. chamber for containing a smolrable product, a stem carried by the bowl and disposed above the chamber and having a smolre duct opening directly in the bowl, a plug adjustably mounted in the bowl and adapted in one position to lie wholly below the plane of the smoke passage and to cover the discharge end of the magazine chamber and adapted when adjusted to another position to uncover the discharge end of the said magazine chamber, a follower located in the chamber and including a closure portion, and means for holding the closure portion secured in the chamber whereby the follower' is held operatively in Contact with the smokable product.
