To all whom it may concern:

. Be it known that I, CHARLES E. GOULDING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tampa, in the'county of Hillsboro and .State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Book-Line Guide-Ruler," of which the following is a full, clear, and

' exact description.

Among the principalobjects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a ruler adapted for adjustment of dis-- alined and separate book sections; to provide an operating mechanlsm for rulers of the character above described to enable the same to be adjusted to a margin; to provide rulers of the character mentioned to hold in adjusted position the open sect-ions of books w and to showthe continuous line across the two half faces thereofjand toprovide for rulers of the character mentioned a construction which is simple, efficient and durable. 3

In the present invention such is one of the functions for which the ruler blades 9, 9 are intended.

In the operation of .the rack A as described in the patent referred to, the book is bodily lifted or shifted to dispose the line being copied at the proper height. The blades 9 are therefore maintained at a 0on stant level while the book isshifted to raise and lowerv the successive lines past the. edge of the saidblades. The brackets 10, 10; are

securely mounted upon the stationary portion of the said rack A. .The adjustment of. the blades 9, 9 is therefore limited to accommodate the bulge of the leaves, and for this purpose the two blades are independently inclined from the horizontal plane. For this purpose the block 18 is vertically shifted above the block 13 when the screw 15 is manipulated. To manipulate the screw 15 there is provided a disk-like head 22. In the vertical adjustment of the block 18 and blade connected therewith the movement is lim ited by the length of the lugs 19, which if raised too high pass from engagement with the bracket 20 and the shoulder 21. Within a sufliciently wide radius, however, it Will be seen that the block 18 may be vertically adjusted by the manipulation referred to.

To change the vertical inclination of the blades 9 I have provided a spindle 23 having a manipulating head 2-1 and a screw threaded end section 25. The screw threaded section 25 registers with screw threads formed in the screw 15, and extends through the pintle end 16 to bear on the under side of the hinge wings 26. The hinge wings 26 are riveted as at 27 to the horizontal extension or shelf 28 of the bladev 9. The hinge wings 26 are perforated to pivot on the hinge pin 29 extended, as seen best in Fig. 2 of the drawings, between the hinge lugs 30,

30 set up from the block 18. It will be seenthat as the spindle 23 is rotated it is lifted or lowered in the screw 15 to raise or lower the hinge wing 26 from the upper face of the block 18. As the block 18 is maintained constantly in the horizontal plane the hinge wing and blade 9 connected therewith are disposed at an angle to the horizontal. This adjustment is required where through the sag of the large leaf of the heavy books employed in registering abstracts of title the pitch of the leaves of the book is inclined. Thus it will be seen that by the manipulation of the bar 11 the ruler blades 9 may be carried back and forth from the book on the rack A to press the ruler blades 9 against the leaves at each side of the hinge of the said book. It will also be seen that the vertical angle or pitch of the ruler blades as extended from the pivot block 18 may be varied to accommodate the inclination of the lines on the leaves of the book. It will also be seen that by adjusting the two blades 9, 9 to the opposite sides of the book mistakes in following the line on which the information is recorded is avoided.

When the book is being adjusted upon the rack, or the leaves are outturned, the blades 9, 9 are lifted on the hinge wings 26 and pivot blocks 18 to the uplifted and spread position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A book line guide ruler, comprising a vertical stand; a plurality of supporting brackets stationarily mounted on said stand; a plurality of supporting rods slidably mounted in said brackets; a plurality of blades pivotally mounted on said rods; and a plurality of devices disposed between said blades and said rods to vary the disposition of said blades.

2. A book line guide ruler, comprising an upright stand; a plurality of supporting brackets fixedly mounted on said stand; a plurality of supporting rods slidably mounted in said brackets, for movement in a substantially horizontal plane; a plurality of blades pivotally mounted upon said rods, extending from the margin toward the hinge of an open book on said stand; a plurality of devices interposed between said blades and said rods to vary the disposition of said blades; and means mounted on said rods for controlling the angle between said rods and said blades in the horizontal plane.

3. A book line guide ruler, comprising an upright stand having-a shelf support for a book in open position; a plurality of brackets pivotally mounted upon said stand; a plurality of supporting rods slidably and non-rotatively mounted in said brackets to move in a plane perpendicular to said stand and book supported thereon; a plurality of hinge-blocks pivotally mounted at the outer end of said rods; a plurality of blades on said hinge-blocks and extending from beyond the margin of the hinge of said book, when opened; a plurality of setscrews adjustable vertically through said hingeblocks, to support said blades, to vary the vertical adjustment thereof; and a plurality of projections mounted on said rods, extending in the path of said pivot-blocks to vary the angle of said blades relative to said rods in the plane perpendicular to said stand.
