Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented dan. 7,1913.
To all whom/15 may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. FREDE, a citizen of the United States, residing atl St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Double Body` Bolsters, of which the following 'is a full, N clear, and exact description, such as' will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a double body bolster of my improved construction. Fig. 2-s a vertical s ectiontaken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3&3 of Fig. v1.
This invention relates to a double body bolster for railway cars of the'type shown in patents #706,646 and 706,680. y
The principalobjects of my invention are, to provide a one-piece cast metal body bolster wherein the two main carrying members are provided at their centers with openings adapted to receive the center sills of the car underframe, vto connect the central portions of the main carrying members` with a member that is substantially U'shape d in cross section that v:t'orms asupport for the center sills, and further to produce a comparatively light, strong, durable and rigid struc'- ture having its component members so arranged and the metal therein so distributed as to readily withstand all strains and stresses to which the structure may be subjected in service.
To the above purposes my invention con slsts in certain novel features of construction land arrangement of part-s hereinafter' more i 40 fully described and claimed.
In the construction ofv the double body bolster as shown 1 designates the main car- -rying members which are arranged parallel with each other, said members being preferably of I-beam shape in cross section and with their ends formed so as to receive the ,side sills of the car undert'iame. Formed @through the central portions of the webs of these members 1 are openings 2, and to i reinforce the bottom flanges of the members beneath these openings, longitudinally eX- tending ribs 3 are formed on the nndersides of said bottom flanges beneath said openings. Formed integral with and connecting the 5 central portions of the members -1- is a trough-shaped housingcomprising a bottom plate 4 and a pair 4of vertically disposed walls or web plates 5. The bottom plate 4 is in alinement with and practically a continuation of the bottom flanges of the members 1, and the vertical walls of web plates 5 are arranged at the end of the openings 2.
Formed integral with the upper edges o f the vertical walls or web plates 5 are horizonv tally disposed strengthening flanges 8, the ends of which unite with the top 'flanges of the members 1.
Side beams 9, preferably channel-shaped in cross section, are arranged between the outer portions of the main carrying members l, which side beams are parallel with the central member of the double body bolster and carry. the side bearings.
Formed through the center of thebottom plate 4 is an opening 10 adapted to receive the lower portion of the king pin l(not shown), and which king pin passes through a cast metal housing B that is arranged between the center sills. Fixed' in any suitable manner to the underside of the plate 4 between the a'nges or strengthening ribs 7 is a center bearing plate C, provided with a centrally arranged openin that coincides withthe king pin openings trough the plate 4 and the housing B.
In my improved double body .bolster the main carrying members that are provided Awith openings at their centers forthe center sills, are united by a troughlshaped member, which, besides forming a s rong and rigid connection between th'e cent rsof the main carrying members, rovid a support for the center sills and or the cast metal housing arranged between said lcenter sills and which receives the king pin.
l The top and bottom flanges of the main carrying members are continuous above the openings in the central portiotns thereof, andv by connecting the end portions of the channel-shaped member with themain carrying which l es Aadapt members nr und the openings therein, a. subi. s l. J f i S :fzln vliz i e .-pieoo structure is Aproduced i i 'the requisite strength and rigidity to ivi'thsmini till service strains and stresses to which it ay be subjected.
ii double body bolster of my improved Construction can he readily eombinoijl with the center :ind side sills ot an underlirame, and these parts een be z embled with tbe expenditure oit' oompai. tively little time and labor.
it will be readily understood 'that minor ehenges in the sire, torni sind construction s a integral with said Ad to receive the Center sills of a oar underlrfime, und -i channel-shaped member connecting the oei al, portions of snidmain carrying members.
A double body bolster having` main Carrying members having openings formed through their ventral portions, odai'ited to ri, rnire the conter sills oi' a ear miderframe, and center sill supports .integral with and eo frtini the control portions oiA said moin lilifli .i having a pair of that: 'provided and with renter central portions and o centrally disinember integral with n a in oarryi n m enr with iop non sill openinfs bron between said tl-u" posed, trough-sli: Land sonnet. lpg bers,
.''i. double body bolster having a pair of moin carrying members that are provided with top and bottom flanges, with center sill openings through their central portions be i', A double body bolster having a pair of main carrying members provided with centrally arranged center sill openings, verti cally disposed walls integral with the main Carrying members at the ends of the center sill openings, and a bottom plate connecting the lower portions of said Walls.
i double body bolster having a pair of main Carrying members provided With center sill openings, and a center sill supporting plate integral with the central portions or' said main carrying members beneath the center sill openings.
Sl. A double body bolster having main carrying members provided with center sill openings, and tlanged plates integral With u nd connecting` said main Carrying members, which flanged plates are arranged at the ends of the center sill openings. I 10. In a double body bolster, a pair of main' carrying members providediwith center sill openings, a channel-shaped member Connecting the central portions of said carrying members, and side rails connecting the outer portions of said carrying members.
ll. A. double body bolster having o. pair of main carryingl members, and stronghshaped center sill supporting member integral with and connecting the central pori'i'ons ol' said moin carrying members.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto alix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses, this 20th day of May, 1912. K
