SPECIFICATION forming part of Letter-S'Patent No. 729,257, dated May 26, 1903.
' d Application filed August 21,1902. Serial No. 120,556. #lo model.)v
To all afkomst may concern.:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. BELLows, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Steel Gondola Car, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Y Figure l is side elevation of my gondola car in which the side sill 2 is a flan ged pressedA metal shape. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the side sill a rolled shape. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectionV on the line III III of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view showing the attachment of the floor-beam to the side sill of the car shown in Fig. 2. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are similar sectional views showing modified constructions.
In the drawings, 2 represents the side sill of a car, which in Fig. 1 is-a flanged beam, pressed with its ends tapering or of less depth than the middle, and'in Fig. 2 is a rolled shadpe of uniform cross-section from end to en 3 is the center sill, and 4 represents the side plates, which are formed, as shown in Fig. 3, with top and bottom flanges 5 5. These flanges, as shown at 5', need not be integral with the plates, but may be constituted by separate angle-pieces riveted to the margins of the plates. The side plates are riveted at the iianges to the sidesills and the floor-plates 6 are riveted to the side plates and preferably, also, to the sidesills.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I show the floor-plates in serted between the flanges of the side sill and side plates and held thereto by rivets which pass through these members.
In Fig. 5 the door-plate 6 is flanged downwardly at 7, and this flange is riveted to the side plate 4 above the connection of the side plate to the side sill. VThis flange is preferably an integral part of the floor-plate, but is not necessarily so.
In Fig. 6 the construction issimilar to that of Fig. 5,'except that the dange of the floorplate is directed upwardly, the meeting flanges of the side plate and side sill are di- 5o rected outwardly, the side sill is a rolled shape,
while in Fig. 5 it is a pressed shape, and the lfloor-beams 8 are cut away to accommodate the inturned flanges.
In Fig. 7 the construction is like that of Fig. 5, except that the meeting flanges of the side sill and side plate are directed outwardly and the licor-beam 8 is not cut away.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I show short angles 9 applied to the side sills as a support for the floor-beams. In each of the figures I show side stakes 10 secured to the side plates and side sills for stiftening the structure.
My invention affords great strength with economy and simplicity of construction.
Those skilled in the art will be able from the foregoing description to modify the construction without departing from my inven tion as hereinV claimed, since l. A metal gondola car having flanged side sills, side 'plates extending above said sills, said side plates having horizontally-extending flanges at their lower'margins and being secured to the side sills, horizontally-extendL ing floor-plates, all of which are secured to the same one oit' said parts, and vertically-en a tending side stakes secured to the sides and side sills; substantially as described.
2. A metal gondola car having flanged side sills, and side plates extending above them, said side plates havin g flanges at their margins and secured to the side sill, horizontal doorlplates all of which` are secured to the side plates, and side stakes secured to the side plates and side sills; substantially as described. Y
3. A metal gondola car having anged side sills, and Aside plates, said sideplates having ilanges at their margins andsecu'red to the side sills, horizontal floor-plates all of which rco and side stakes also secured to said parts; and side sills, anda center sill; substantially substantially as described. as described. xo
5. Ametal gondola car having flanged side In testimony whereof I have hereunto set sills, and side plates, said side plates having my hand.
5 anges at their margins and secured to the ARTHUR B. BELLOWS.
side sills, horizontal Hoor-plates, all of which Witnesses: are secured to both the side plates and the GEO. B. BLEMING,
side sill, side stakes secured to the side plates L. M. REDMAN.
