Be it knoWn that I, CLAUDE R. BANKS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Fruitvale, in the county of Alameda and State of' California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to .smoking Pipes- The `principal object-s of m invention are to' provide a. pipe in which t 1e tobacco may be burned upwardly, the most satisfactory manner, this being facilitated by an `under draft, and to avoid the carrying into the bore of the pipe stem, such juices as are distilled from use of the pipe.

Other' objects of my invention are t-o prolvide a substalr'tiatlly inclosed tobacco, re-

ceiving bowl which protects the contents from the influence of wind and provides a 1s akfepipe which will not emit sparks or the Further objects of my invention are to so dispose lthe several elements forming the pipe, to facilitate cleaning and `provide a pipe which will notexpose the bowl vtherethe burning tobacco.

The base 6 is formed to fit nicely to the contour of the body portion 4 in order to provide a neatvbowl and I prefer to limit the swing of the base, laterally in one direction, and to rovide for retaining it in closed relation to t e bore 7 by providing an outstanding portion 18, on body portion 4, against which the base abuts as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing.

The top 5 carries a. receptacle 23 for the tobacco, by means of a threaded extension 24 which may be screwed into the socket 19. This receptacle is cn -shaped and in a normal position of the pipe, is inverted, and has `a bore 25 through extension 24 by which communication is V made with bore 20. The

receptacle 23 is relatively i smaller than the bore 7 so that there is an annular s ace '26 therebetween. The lower margin o receptacle 23 rests in the beforementioned seat 8 `forming a neat and'y rigid4 connection.

A plurality of apertures 27 are formed in body portion 4,' preferably disposed to open adjacentthe bottom of receptacle '23, which admits air into annulars ace 26. The receptacle 23 is also provide with a pluralit of apertures 28 adjacent its lower en whereby air is admitted into the said receptacle from annular space 26.

The operation of the device is as follows: The pipe fis inverted, that is, disposed with the bowl downward, the base 6 is removed,

As soon as t e tobacco is ignited s ufficiently to insure proper burning, the base 6 is brought into place, with respect to body portion 4, as described, 'and the pipe returned to a normal position.` When in this position the draft is conveyed successively through apertures27,zannular'space 26 and apertures 28, to the receptacle 23, by suction through thebores, 25, 20, 21 and22. Inasmuch as the bore 2O opens at the top of the tobacco receptacle, any juices distilled are not drawn intothe smoke intakev bore; the annular space 26 prevents the intense heat of the burning tobacco from acting upon the bowl portion 4; the disposition of the parts is such as toenable a thorou h cleaning of-v -the 'parts' by disassemblage an -the receptacle' 23 may, at any time,- be easily replaced by a new or clean like member. It will further be noted that the burnin tobacco is :confined within the bowl an is ltherefore not disturbed by wind and will not become dislaced or emitted should the pipe be ropped or. become positioned out of the normal. communicate with the said bore therein, the said receptacle being disposedwithin the said -bore of said body portionl and relatively smaller'than the same to provide an air space thereabout, and further having an air inlet opening in communication with the said airspace, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a smoking pipe, the combination of a body portion having a' vertically disposed bore, :in inlet opening to said bore, and an lannular seat at its lowerend; a stemv for said body portion; a base for said body tion; means pivotally connecting said to said stem wherebyit 'may be swung tov cover or uncover the said bore in said body portion; a top forsaid'body portion, having an internall threaded socket and a bore leading from said socket, the said body portion, and stem having a bore in communication with said bore in saidv top; means for rigidly retaining said top' in connection with said body portion; and an'A inverted cylindrical tobacco receptacle having a threaded vextension adapted to be screwed into the said socket of said topand a bore por- I ase through said extension adapted to communicatewith the said bore therein, the said receptacle' being disposed with said bore of said body portion, relatively smaller than the same to provide an' air space thereabout, with its lower margin resting inthe said seat of said body portion, and having air inlet lopenings inrcommunication with the said air space, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
