HENRY W. BOWMAN, OF BARBOUBVILLE, KENTUCKY.
COLLAPSIBLE DRINKING-CUP.
Application filed August 2, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY XV. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barbour-ville, in the county of Knox and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Drinking-Cups; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accon'ipanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of refer ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in collapsible drinking cups and comprises a simple and etlicient device of this nature, the body portion of which is made preferably of a single spiral of resilient material and in the provision of a combination lock and handle which is adapted to hold the cup collapsed when not in use.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
.l illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 a perspective view of a made in accordance with my invention shown as extended for use, and Fig. 2 similar view showing the cup collapsed held in such position.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a strip of resilient material, preferably of metal, which is bent in spiral form and adapted to form the wall of a drinking cup, the folds of the coil overlapping one another as shown and drawn tightly together as the cup is extended. A suitable bottom B is provided for the cup. At tlie upper end of the strip a. headed lug E is mounted, the shank portion of which passes through and is adapted to have a play in an elongated slot F formed adjacent thereto in the strip and which pin and slot serve as a means for holding the end of the strip in place and allowing the same to have a slight play as may be necessary in the collapsing or extending of the cup.
cup and is a a n d Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1 912.
Serial No. 712,958.
Fixed to the strip, preferably upon the outer surface of the same at any suitable location, is a strip H in which the shank portion N of the handle N has a bearing, the lower end of said shank portion terminating in a hook and adapted to engage underneath the bottom of the cup when the same is collapsed or in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thus serving as a means for holding the cup collapsed while the handle is swung against the side of the cup as shown.
In operation, when it is desired to extend the cup, the handle is merely swung out.- wardly so that the hook will be released from the bottom and the resiliency of the strip, which is under tension when in a collapsed form, will cause the top to open up in the shape shown in Fig. 1, the spiral portions of the strip being held by friction against the inner adjacent portions about which they coil. to make a tight joint.
l. A collapsible cup comprising a strip of material bent to form a spiral coil, forming the wall of the cup and adapted to be collapsed when not in use, a bottom to the cup, and means for holding the cup collapsed, as set forth.
9. A. collapsible cup comprising a strip of material bent to form a spiral coil, forming the wall of the cup and adapted to be col lapsed when not in use, a bottom to the cup, a pivotal handle upon the cup, and means actuated by the handle for holding the cup collapsed, as set forth.
3. A. collapsible cup comprising a strip of material bent to form a spiral coil, forming the wall of the cup and adapted to be collapsed when not in use, a bottom to the cup, a handle pivotally mounted upon the strip and having an integral portion thereof adapted to hold the cup collapsed, as set forth.
l. A. collapsible cup comprising a strip of material bent to form a spiral coil, forming the wall of the cup and adapted to be collapsed when not in use, a bottom to the cup, a handle having a shank portion pivotally mounted upon the strip, one end of said shank bent to form a hook for engagement with the bottom of the cup when collapsed, as' set forth.
5. A collapsible cup comprising a strip of resilient metal bent in spiral form, a bot- In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my tom fixed to one end of the cup, a headed signature in the presence of two Witnesses. lu fastened to one end of the strip and T 7 T if adapted to have a play in a slotin the strip, HEARX and a handle pivoted to the cup and having a projection adapted to hold the cup collapsed, as set forth.
