Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MoLLoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at vWest Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in buckles, and while applicable for many purposes, is particularly intended for use as a belt buckle, and especially to buckles of the pin-tongue type. In the use of leather belts, it is often desired to shorten the strap.

The object of this invention is to provide means for att-aching the strap to the buckle in such a way that if desired the strap can be readily shortened and again attached; and the invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.

In illust-rating my invention, I have shown it in connection with a buckle of common type comprising a rectangular frame 2 and a pivotal pin tongue 3 which is adapted to pass through perforations in the strap. My improved strap-attaching means consists of a plate 4 having hook ends 5 adapted to engage with the rear bar 6 of the buckle frame. Between the ends 5 the metal is formed with bearings 7 turned upward from the plate to receive the ends of a wire loop 9 t-he rear bar 10 of which is adapted to snap Specification of Letters Patent.

under the post or stud 11 struck up from the center of the plate and inclined forward. rlhe rear end of the plate is preferably formed with a tuck-loop 12, and the sides of the plate are turned up to form anges 13 and 14. The end of the strap 15 is formed with a hole 15 adapted to sit over the post or stud 11 which, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, is slightly bowed. When the strap is thus engaged with the stud or post, the loop 9 is pressed downward and the bar 10 snapped under the upper edge of the post, thus interlocking the end of the strap with the plate 4. The strap preferably corresponds in width to the width of the plate 4 between the flanges 13 and 14 which anges prevent the plate from turning on the strap. The free end 17 of the strap is engaged with the pintongue, and then passed beneath the tuckloop 12 as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This construction permits the strap to be shortened atany time by disconnecting it from the plate cutting off the desired amount and forming another hole to sit over the post 11. The strap is thus shortened without making additional holes in the free end of the strap.

I claim The combination with a buckle frame, of a strap-holder comprising a plate formed with forwardly projecting hooks adapted to engage with the buckle frame, bearings located between said hooks, said plate formed with an upwardly and forwardly projecting post adapted to be entered through a strap end, and a loop having its ends entered into said bearings and extending rearward above the plane of the plate sufficient for the reception of the strap end between them and having a rear bar adapted to be snapped under the upper end of said post.
