LUCENA IVI. MOR/DEN, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
LOGSE-LEAF BINDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCENA M. MonnnN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the coui'ity of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders,.the object of the invention being to provide an improved binder of the class described having a plurality lof sets of openable prongs or rings, all of which may be simultaneously opened or closed by the shifting lof such prongs or rings toward or from each other, While either or all of the sets may be shifted independently relatively to the supporting member' carrying the same, where-by a much more practicable device of this character is provided than heretofore, and which advantageous features are obtained in an extremely simple and inexpensive manner without sacrificing' the durability, strength and practicability of the structure, and in which the prongs are, in
' the embodiment shown, carried by suitable base plates either directly interlocked with each other or connected through the medium of a longitudinally extending memberv or members, which also forms the means for connecting the several sets of prongs together to permit them to be simultaneously opened or closed.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specitication, Figure 1 illustrates a perspective View of one form of this improvement; Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate details thereof; Fig. l is a cross-sectional view thereof; Fig. 5 illustrates a somewhat different embodiment of the same improvement; Fig. 6 is an end view thereof; Fig. 7 illustrates a detail thereof; Fig. 8 is a perspective vievvl illustrating a still diti'erent embodiment of t-he same improvement; Fig. 9 is an end View thereof; Fig. l0 is a perspective vien7 illustrating another embodiment 0f the same improvement; and Fig. 11 is an end View thereof.
Similar characters of reference indicate correspon'ding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

The ring supporting member in the present instance, in all the forms of the present improvement shown herein, comprises what may be considered a back member consisting of a concave formedcasing 2 having a pair of inturned longitudinally extending flanges or edges 3fA and et, although it is to be under-I stood that this casing or supporting menibei' may b e inclosed in a separate back inember which may be more readily attached in some instances to the covers if preferred. Each setof prongs 5 comprises a pair o1 similarly formed members, except that the prongs have the mating ends thereof formed one with a notch While the other is formed to extend into such notch, although other forms of mating ends could be used if desired. Eachl set of prongs will be provided with a top or cover member 6 adapted to overlap the supporting member and inclose the base members and prongs, this cover member being provided with/'a pair of reeesses or noto es to permit the opening and closing movement of the prongs.
In the form slioivn'in Figs. l to 4 each prong is provided with a base plate 7, one of which is provided with oppositely extending projections orvtongues 8 and 9, thus forming a notch for the reception of a centrally l0- cated member shown in the present instance as a bar 10 bent upon itself to form a groove 11, into which the edge of the base plate of the opposite prong fits, such edge-thus forming a seat for the groove or slot 11, from which it Will be. observed that in this form one of the base plates, byl reason of its projections, overlaps such bar while the other base plate projects thereinto, the outer edges of each base plate being received under the inturned flange of the supporting easing. and therefore these base plates constitute the means, together with the back member. for giving the desired spring action to the prongs so that they will properly close and v be held closed, or be held open when openech.
The bar 10 thus connects all of the sets of prongs together so that manipulating any one'of the sets all ofjsuch sets will be simultaneously opened or closed in a manner which ivill be readily understood. ivhile atthe saine time any one of the sets may be .pron
' shifted-r adjustedl lengthwise of the supporting 'member toward or from a 'companionset of prongs"orfrings. Itwill also be observed that both prongs of eachset '5 open substantially equally, so that a greater number of sheets may be inserted than -when" only one is opened while the otherremains.-
