LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 27, 1906.
To mil whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs O. DAWSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to loose-leaf binders of the so-called hinge-back type, in which a pair of blocks or plates are hinged together and carry impaling prongsor arches for securing the leaves to be bound together.
The object of the invention is to improve and simplify devices of this kind and it consists in the structure hereinafter described and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in 'which Figure 1 is an end view of the binder. Fig. 2 is a detail plan thereof, some portions being broken away. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the binder open. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section taken on the plane of the hinge. Fig. 5 is a detail back view of the binder; and Fig. 6 is a detail of the binder in perspective, showing the form of hinge employed.
A pair of blocks 10 11, hinged together, form the back or base of the binder. A pair of angle-plates 12 13 are secured to the upper or inner faces of the blocks 10 and 11, one leaf of each plate rising along the inner face of and being secured to the side plates 14 15 of the back of the binder. The impaling prongs or arches 16 17 are fixed in-the plates 12 18, as shown, two in each of said plates, and extend across the interior of the binder. A side or cover plate 18 19 is hinged to each of the side plates 14 15.
A suitable lock is provided for holding the binder in its closed position and, as shown, consists of a hook 20, anchored to the inner face of one of the blocks, as 11, and extending over the inner face of the other block, and a spring-latch 21, fixed to the latter block and engaging the hook.
The blocks 10 and 11 are hinged together by means of a plurality of pairs of straps or strong tapes 22 23. Each of these tapes is secured to the inner edge of one of the blocks and to the outer face of the other, the several straps or tapes cooperating to form an extremely-flexible hinge, a suitable material being used, one which securely holds the two blocks in proper relation.
The straps or tapes may be so thin that the usual outer covering 24 may be applied to the back of the binder without distortion, and consequently without rendering it liable to wear, as is the case when metal hinges are used. For the purpose of securing symmetry the two hinge-tapes of each pair preferably lie side by side, and filling-tapes 25 26 are applied to the backs of the blocks 10 and 11 in line with each.
The binder is further strengthened by pro longing the hinge straps or tapes 22 23 beyond the blocks 10 11, across the outer faces of the plates 14 15, and some distance along the plates 18 19, as more plainly indicated at 27 28, Fig, 2, these straps thus strengthening the hinges uniting the cover-plates 18 19 with the side plates 14 15.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a loose-leaf binder of the type described, in combination, a pair of blocks having meeting faces, pairs ofstraps, members of each pair being attached to the meeting face of one block and the back of the other, and impaling-prongs carried by the blocks.
2. In a loose-leaf binder of the type described, in combination, a pair of blocks hav ing meeting faces, pairs of straps, members of each pair being attached to the meeting face of one block and the back of'the other, a pair of angle-plates secured to the upper faces of the blocks, and impaling-prongs set in the angle-plates.
3. In a loose-leaf binder of the type describedfin combination, a pair of blocks having meeting faces, a pair of side plates, one thereof rising from the outer edge of each block, cover-plates flexibly attached to the side plates, pairs of straps hinging the blocks together, each strap being secured to one of the meeting faces of one block and the back of the other and being prolonged and secured to the side plate and the cover-plate attached thereto.
