To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK PHILIP ZURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to garments such as trousers and contemplates improved construction at the waist portion thereof.

In the clothing trade it often happens that a person requires a coat of one size, but trousers of a smaller or larger size than such size as would ordinarily go with the coat. It is then necessary for the salesman to either alter part of a suit, or to break another suit to get the desired sizes.

One of the main objects of my invention is therefore to provide such waist construction for trousers that one pair of trousers will adapt itself to different sizes of waist, z'. e. one pair of trousers cut to one standard waist size will be adaptable to several larger or smaller waist sizes and without any reconstruction. For example, a size 36 will also fit persons having No. 34, 35, 37 and 38 waist. This I accomplish by making the trousers elastic at the Waist by improved construction involving elastic inserts so that a waist of one size will stretch and lit waists of larger sizes and by securing inner belt straps to the trousers at the sides thereof to be adjustably clasped together across the abdomen of the wearer, the belt straps serving to adjust the trousers for waists of smaller size and to hold the trousers in place so that Suspenders are unnecessary. Loops may be provided at intervals at the waist if desired for receiving an outer belt to improve the appearance and also to cover the elastic inserts.

My invention is clearly illustrated on the accompanying drawing in which,

The trousers are of the usual cut and con struction except that the upper ends of the side seams 10 are left open and likewise the Specification of Letters Patent.

upper ends of darts 11 are left open, thus leaving slits 12 and 13 at each side of the trousers. The cloth sect-ion 14 together with the lining section 15 between the slits forms on each side of the trousers a loop 16, the edges of which are finished off. An elastic band 17 passes through each loop and has its ends sewed to the edges 18 and 19 adjacent the loop edges. The elastic insert or band is secured near its upper edge to the loop sides by a short line of stitching 20, while the lower edge of each band extends down below the base of its loop and is secured by a line of stitching 21 running across the loop base between the lower ends of the slits 12 and 13. The upper sections of the inserts or bands between the stitching 2O and the edges 18 and 19 are free to expand and contract to adapt the waist or belt of the trousers to varying waist measurements. Upon expansion of the waist the edges 18 and 19 pull away from the loops and the slits 12 and 13 become V shaped as shown in Fig. 2. Normally, however, the edges 12 and 13 coincide with the adjacent edges of the loops, but do not overlap.

In order to adjust the trousers for smaller waists and to more efliciently hold the trousers up without the use of Suspenders belt sections or straps 22 and 23 are secured at their rear ends to the trouser waist adjacent the edges 18 at opposite sides of the trousers, one of said straps having clasp heads 24, and the other straps having clasp sockets 25 for receiving the heads to thus secure the straps across the wearers abdomen. The straps, together with the elast-ie sections 17 and the back section of the trouser waist, form a belt for efliciently supporting the trousers independently of Suspenders and for causing the back of the trousers to lit smoothly and snugly against the back of the wearer. The elastic sections then draw back on the front part of the trousers and cause this part to lie snugly and smoothly against the wearers abdomen. The elastic sections expand and contract with the movements of the wearer but at all times maintain the snug fits referred to. The belt sections or straps 22 and 23, by engaging across the abdomen will also give great comfort to heavy set persons.

Although an outer belt is not at all necessary for the support of the trousers, such belt may be worn for sake of appearance,

and ordinary belt loops 26 may beprovided at desired places, the belt being passed through these loops and alsothrough the loops 16, the belt then serving to hide the slits 12 and 13 and the elastic inserts.

I thus produce a construction for trou-V sers which makes it unnecessary to provide a different size for each suit, but which will make one size adaptable for various sizes of suits. The construction also entirely eliminates the use of suspenders and the trousers can be worn with great comfort and will always fit snugly.

Having thus described my invent-ion I claim the following:

1. In trousers, the combination of the outer goods and lining at the waist, of two substantially vertical seams extending downwardly from the edge of the waist, the upper ends of said seams remaining open so that a loop is left between them, and an elastic band extending through said loop Thusouter belt will, of course, be worn suiiicientlyA and connected at its ends with rthe vedges of the seams adjacent the loop sides.

2. In trousers, the combination of the outer goods and inner lining at the waist part, of a pair of substantially vertical seams at each side of the waist part having their upper ends disconnected to leave slits and a loop between said slits, an elastic band extending through each loop and connected at its ends with the edges of the slits opposite the side edges of the loop, and belt straps secured at their rear ends to the waist portion adjacent the front ends of said bands and having clasp mechanism whereby they may be clasped together over the wearers body to support the trousers therefrom.
