NECK-WIRE FOR RECEPTACLE-CLOSURES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Cas'ro, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Washin ton, in the county of Washington and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Wires for Receptacle- Closures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invent-ion relates to neck wires for receptacle closures, and the primary object of my invention is the provision of positive and reliable means, as hereinafter set forth, for securing a neck wire upon the neck of a jar or other receptacle, without resorting to the use 'of a pair of pliers or other instruments for twisting the wire whereby it will be held upon the receptacle.

Another object of this invention is to provide a neck wire for the closures of re ceptacles that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the neck of a jar or other receptacle without injuring the jar or breaking the neck wire.

A further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is inexpensive to manufacture, durable and highly efficient for the,

purposes for which it is intended.

With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangementof parts to be hereinafterspecifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing wherein like numerals denote corre sponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a jar, partly broken away and partly in section. showing the neck wire upon the jar, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a detached neck wire, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the neck wire, and Fig. 4 is a modification ofa port-ion of the neck wire.

The reference numeral 1 denotes, by the way of an example, a receptacle in the form of a jar that has a neck 2, a rim 3, a pouring edge 4, an annular seat 5, a gasket 6, and a lid or closure 7 provided with a bail seat 8.

The neck wire has one end thereof bent to provide a hook or eye 10 and the opposite end thereof is bent at a right angle to the horizontal plane of the neck Wire and twisted to provide 'a finger piece 11. The extreme end of the wire is bent to form a clasp comprising members 12 and .13. the latter representing the extreme end of the wire and said member is normally in parallelism with the member 12. The member 13 extends behind the finger piece 11 and said finger piece 11 ser es functionally as a keeper for retaining the end of the member 13 under the rim 3 and in a locked position. At the juncture of the members 12 and 13 the wire is flattened or weakened, as at 14. whereby the member 13 of the clasp can be easily bent, also whereby the clasp can firmly engage the eye or hook 10 of the neck wire In lieu of flattening the clasp, as at 14 the clasp can be notched or offset, as at 15 and illustrated in Fig. 4.

soldered or otherwise mounted upon the neck wire 9 at diametrically opposed points are hearing pieces 16 having openings 17 for the ends of pintles 18 of a locking yoke 19. The locking yoke 19, adjacent to the bearing pieces 16, is bent to provide eyes 20 and loosely mounted in said eyes are the inwardly projecting ends 21 of a bail 22. The bail 22 is swung over the lid or closure 7 and engages in the bail seat 8, while the locking yoke 19 engages the breast of the jar l and retains the bail in a locked position and the lid or closure 7" snugly upon the gasket 6 of the jar.

I attach considerable importance to the fact that the neck wire is made of a single piece of material shaped to provide a clasp that permits of the ends of the neck wire being connected and the wire firmly looked upon the neck of a receptacle. It has the advantage of being quickly removed by pressing the finger piece or keeper 11 outwardly to release the member 18 of the clasp,

furthermore, that the neck wire can be correctly positioned whereby the bearing pieces 16 will be correctly held relatively to the rim 3 of the jar.

While in the drawing there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural ele- 9i; reassess lapping the other, said clasp ments are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. A neck Wire formed "from a single length of wire haying one end thereof bent to provide an eye, said wire at a point between its other end and its center bent to form an upwardly extending finger piece adapted to abut against the neck of a re-' 2. A neck wire formed from a single length of wire having one end thereof bent to provide an eye, said wire at a point between its other end and its center bent to form an upwardly extending finger piece adapted to abut against the neck of a receptacle, that portion of the wire projecting from said finger piece toward said other end constituting a clasp bent upon itself forming two members, one of said members overlapping the other, said clasp at the bend thereof extending through said eye, the upper of said members maintained in closed osition by said finger piece, the upper of said members engaging the inner side of said finger piece at the lower end thereof, a locking yoke, means for connecting said locking yoke to said neck wire and a bail ported by said locking yoke.
