To all whom t may concern.' Be it known that I, CHARLES DUsTIN a subject of the King of Great Britain, resid- -ing at Brock ort, in the county of Monroe and State of ew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is Aa specification.

--This invention relates to a combined match scratcher and lantern lighter and has for an object to provide an articleof this character which can be attached to any standard form of lantern and arranged thereon in such proximity to the wicktube: of the burner that in the actrof scratching the match'the latter, when ignited may be effectively guided toward the wick tube and the Awick ignited.

The burner 1 shown herein'may be of any well known standard construction and as illustrated the wick tube 2 rises from the central'portion of the perforated base 3 of the burner and it has its upper end disposed substantially in the same general plane with the aperture 4 in the Wall 5 of the burner.

The combinedmatch scratcher and match guiding member 6 is constructed from a single piece of metal which is formed at one end to providea match guiding surface l which in the wall 5 of the burner and to terminate immediately at the wick tube 2 so that a lighted match may be guided over the surface 7 and directed toward the Wick tube 2 whereby one may readily yeffect a lighting of 4the Wick as Ais understood. The said member 6 is also constructed to provide an opening 8 whichis in registration with the passage 4 in the burner. The material stamped from the. member` 6 for the purforming'a portion of this 1s adapted to be passed through the slot 4v wardlyl and `extended through the passage 4 as at`9 and thence clenched at l0 against the back of the wall 5. The said member` 6- is also provided at one end with aA tongue ll which is adapted to be extended through the slot 12 in the Wall 5 of the burner and then bent at 13 against the back of the wall 5. l

From the construction described it is evident that the `article 6 may be. readily ap lied to the burner without requiring any ela orate changes to be made to the latter and in use the lantern may be quickly lighted without necessitatin the removal of the chimney therefrom. I e lmember 6 is provided at a point between the-tongue 1l" and the opening 8 with an abrasive surface 14 upon which-the match can be struck and ignited and also guided to a. point upon the member where it may be placed. accurately in the opening 8 and' then guided as previously described to the wick tube.
