BARREL 0R RECEPTACLE.
Be it known that I, JOHN H. KiLLioN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels or Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. l
This invention relates to barrels, boxes or other like receptacles, for packing, storing and shipping purposes and it has for its primary object to provide an improved article of this character which shall be of knocked-down construction and which will be light-and durable when in condition for use, and capable of being nested or packed together with the elements of one or more of such articles when in its knocked-down condition, thus reducing the bulk of these articles when being shipped or stored empty.
With a view to the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of certain` other objects, which will hereinafter appear,
the invention consists in the features of.
novelty which will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.y
In the said drawings, Figure ,1 is a side elevation of a barrel, receptacle or cask embodying this invention. Figi 2 is a transverse section thereof on the line 2-2 of- Fig. 1 just above the loop. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the' line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig.- 4 is an enlarged transverse section of the inter-lock hereinafter described.
The body of the barrel or receptacle is `composed of a corrugated strip 1, whose ends 2 and 3, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4, are overlapped and interlocked. `These ends however are not permanently secured together but are detachably connected .so that when not in use or when it is desired to return the barrel empty and to reduce the bulk thereof as far as'possible, the ends may be detached and this strip composing the body portion unfoldedk to a greater or less degree and nested or stacked up with a plurality of such elements, the metal or material of which the strip 1 is compose-d yielding suiciently when its ends 2, 3, are thus `detached to permit a number of such elements being placedl one within the other. This detachable connection between the ends o-f the strip 1 is preferably accomplished by striking up a loop 4 from the end 2 and 1 forming an aperture 5 in the end 3,a the Specification of Letters Patent. aperture being complementary in shape and location to the loop 4, so that the loop 4 may pass therethrough as shown in Fig. 4,V
and when thus interlocked, a cotter or pin 6 may be insertedfor holding the loop 4 against withdrawal. In thisparticular example the extremity 3 of the strip 1 is also formed with a loop .7, which is incidental to the production ofthe aperture 5 and which lits over the outei1 face of the loop 4 thus adding to the strength of the connection, although it is not essential. These interlocking loops and apertures 4 and 5 may be formed at any desired number of intervals throughout t-he length of the barrel. In the example illustrated in thel drawings, they are located at the top, bottom and middle of the barrel.
For the sake of greater strength, the general form of the barrel is substantially the same as that of the typical barrel and the strip 1 composing the body portion is corrugat-ed in a direction transversely of the strip and longitudinally of the barrel, and the corrugations decrease in width from the mid-length of the barrel toward itsextremities but increase in depth from the midlength toward the ends. At the mid-length, bisecting the corrugations, is preferably formed a channel or bead 8, which is pressed inwardly and lends rigidity to the barrel at this point, resisting lateral or crushing strains Each extremity is also preferably formed with a similar bead 9, which per-` forms the two-fold function of adding rigidity to the body and holding one side of the head 1Q. in each end, shouldered against the beads 9 on the inner side and held'on the outer side by inwardly turned iianges 11, 12, respectively, which are struck inwardly at an oblique angle to the surface of the head. The edges of these flanges 11,12 serve as shoulders, by which the heads are heldin place. When the cotters or pins 6 are withdrawn the ends 2, 3, of the strip are permitted to separate. These heads may be removed in directions lengthwise of their planes when it is desired to knock the barrel down, or as readily inserted again when it is desired to set the barrel up for use. It is obvious, however,that in order that the barrel may be filled after the bottom head is inserted, the flange 12 must be of a character capable of ypermitting the head at the top to be inloo tuting the body are secured together. - that reason, the flanges, l1, l2, at one or both ends of the barrel are sufficiently flexible to permit the head to be forced inwardly past the inner edge of such flange which springs back again to normal position and thus holds the head from being Withdrawn.
In order that the invention might be fully understood by those skilled in the art, the details of the foregoing embodiment thereof have been thus specilically described but What I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a device of the character described, a body portion composed of a strip of corrugated sheet material, means for detachably securing the longitudinal edges together, a head inserted Within the end, and flexible means integral with the body for removably holding the head in position.
2. In a device of the. character described, a body port-ion composed of a strip of corrugated sheet material, means for detachably securing the longitudinal edges together, a head inserted Within the end, and flexible means integral with the body for removably holding the head in position, said head being held Wholly within said flexible means.
3. In a device of the character described, a body portion composed of a strip of corrugated sheet, material having a shoulder adjacent the end thereof, means for detachably securing the longitudinal edges together, a head inserted Within said end against said shoulder, and flexible means integral with the body for. removably holding the head in position, said head being held wholly within said flexible means.
4. In a device of the character described, a body portion composed of a strip of corrugated sheet material having a shoulder adjacent the end thereof, means for detachably securing the longitudinal edges -together, a head inserted within said end against said shoulder, and an Vinwardly turned flexible flange at the end integral gated sheet material having a shoulder ad.

6. In a device of the character described, a body portion composed of a strip of corrugated she'e-t material, detachable means for securing the longitudinal meeting edges thereof, an inwardly directed bead near each end thereof, a head inserted Within each head lying against said bead, and an inwardly turned flexible flange spaced from the body portion at an angle but integral therewith for removably holding the head in position.
7. In a device of the character described, a body portion composed of a strip of corrugated sheet material, detachable means for y securing the longitudinal meeting edges thereof, an equatorial strengthening bead around the device with the corrugations eX- tending at right angles therefrom toward the ends, an inwardly directed bead near each end thereof, a head inserted Within each head lying against said bead, and an inwardly turned flexible llange spaced from the body portion at an angle but integral therewith for removably holding the head in position.
