LAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR M. GRAB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, Illinois, have invented a cer tain new and useful Improvement in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.`
The essential object of this invention is to provide a. new and improved portable lamp or heater which may be carried by a traveler, and which is especially adapted for use in heating a curling iron. The lamp may3 however, be used for any other pur'- pose or purposes.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a lamp co-nstructed as hereinafter described; Fig. 2 is an elevation, the view being at a right angle to that shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view; Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the sparking device in detail; and Fig. 5 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation showing the construction of a part of the device.
The base or stand 1 is adapted to receive the hollow cylinder 2 which is screw threaded at its upper end so as to receive the cap 3. The stand 1 is pro-vided as a convenient means for holding the device, though the same may be retained in the hand of the user. A post 4 is secured to the cap 3, to which post the spring-controlled lever 5 is pivoted at 6, said lever 5 being normally retained in the position shown in Fig. 2 by the spring 7. At its upper end said lever 5 carries the arm 8 which is preferably arcuate in shape, being the arc of a circle, the radius of which is the distance from pivot 6 to the upper surface of said arm 8. Said upper surface of arm 8 is provided with sawteeth 9, the purpose of which is to engage the plug of spark metal 10, which is normally pressed against said teeth 9 by the helical spring 11. Members 10 and 11 are retained within the cylinder 12 which is screw threaded at one end, the interior threaded cap 18 being adapted to screw upon said member 12 and hold the spring 11 in place, and said cylinder 12 is supported upon post 4 by the yoke 14, the arms of which are spaced apart a sufficient distance to permit reciprocation of the arm 8. If the thumb of the operator be placed upon the tip 15 of the lever 5 and the lever thus forced against the resistance of the spring, the arm 8 is carried toward the left in Fig. 2; but when the thumb or finger of the operator is removed the arm 8 moves quickly y Specicatcn of Letters Patent.

The tube 16 extends at an acute angle to the post 4, and its upper end is about on a level with the arm 8 when the same is in Vthe position shown in Fig. 2. I/Vhen it is desired to use the device the spark or sparks from the spark-plug 10 will ignite the lamp.
Secured upon the cylinder 2 is awire post or support 18 the main portion of which is substantially parallel to the post 4, but which is bent at its upper end to form an arm 19 which may be substantially at right angles to the body portion. Secured to said arm 19 is a tube 20, within which the end 21 of the helical spring 22 is received and which spring can, therefore, be partially rotated about arm 19 so as to assume, within certain limits, any position desired. The coiled portion of the spring 22 is of the proper size so as more or less snugly to receive and encircle the heating end of the curling iron 23. The upright 18 is soldered or otherwise secured to the support 24 which is adapted to be clamped by screw 26 to the cylinder 2 and in this manner the curling iro-n is supported from the cylinder and can be adjusted both as regards height and position so that the same comes directly above the flame at the end o-f the wick 17. A cap 27 upon the end of chain 28, which is soldered or otherwise secured to the tube 16, is adapted to cover the exposed end of said tube when the lamp is not in use and thus preventing evaporation of the burning fluid.
Although but one specific embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings, it should be understood that many changes in details of construction can be made without departing from the scope of the invention or of the various claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A lamp or heater, comprising a fluidcontaining chamber, a cap adapted to be secured thereto, said cap bearing a post,a spark-plug supported upon said post, spring-controlled means supported upon said post and adapted to engage said spark plug, a tube for supporting a Wick adapted to communicate With the interior of said chamber, the exposed end of said tube being adjacent to said sparkeplug, and means for clamping the article to be heated, said means being supported from said luid-containing chamber.
2. In a device ofthe character described, the combination of means for producing a flame, an L-shaped member, one arm of Which is adjacent to said lame-producing means, a helical spring, an arm thereupon, and means for receiving said arm of said helical spring, said last mentioned means being secured to the arm of said L-shaped member.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of means for producing a flame, an L-shaped member, one arm of which is adjacent to said llame-producing means, a helical spring, an arm thereupon, and a tube secured to the arm of said L- shaped member, the arm upon said helical spring being received Within said tube.
Il. A lamp or heater comprising a liquidcontaining chamber, a post in connection therewith, a sparking device carried upon said post, a Wick projecting into said chamber, the exposed end of said Wick being adj acent to said sparking device, a helical spring for clamping the article to be heated, and means for supporting said helical spring above the exposed end of said Wick.
