Description

L. 'W. LEARYQ v Lantern/ 'No 104,745. Patented June 28, 1870.
LEMUEL W. LEARY, or uonrotlr, VIRGINIA.
Laim Patent No. 104,745, dated J1me 2s, 1 870.
IMPROVEMENT m LANTERNS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, LEMUEL W. LEARY, of the city and county of Norfolk, in the State of Virginia,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Guards; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a lanterng'uard, embracing my improyement.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding part-s inboth figures.
I This improvement relates to that class of lanterns used by railway-conductors, or others, where it is desirgble to provide guards to protect the glass globe; an
It consists in a novel construction of the guard, and in the' means of connecting it with the top and bottom of the lantern, or either of them, whereby the necessity of cement to secure the glass is obviated, its ready removal for cleaning, or substitution of another in case of fracture, and perfect security in the combination or connection of the several parts constituting the lantern,
are provided for.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents the metallic portion forming the top of an ordinary lantern of the class referred to.
Around the lower portion of this is attached a series of brackets, B, in which are slots 0, near their outer extremity, through which slots the upper ends of'the guard-wires D, which are-bent to form a hook or eye, are passed. I
A securing wire, f, is then passed around through each of these eyes 0, above the brackets B, by which means the base, top, and globe of the lantern are se curely united, in a manner that they may be readily separated, when desired, and so that there is no possible chance of their becoming separated by accident.- What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is--- The combination of the brackets B and wire ring f with the top or base A and guard-wires D of a lantern, constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
I testimony whereof I hereunto set'my hand before two subscribing-witnesses.
LEMUEL W. LEARY.
