SWINGING STOP DEVICE FOR SLIDING SASHES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Louis FONTANNAZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Swinging Stop Devices for Sliding Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in swinging stop devices for sliding sashes, and more particularly in that class of such devices especially adapted and designed for use in controlling the relative movement of the upper and lower sashes of window structures and the object of the invention is to provide a locking device of this general character of a simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and of a strong and substantial construction having novel and improved means adapted to be secured to one of the sashes of a window and acting in conjunction with a second sash to efiectually control the relative movements of such sashes.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, and combinations and arrangements of the several parts of the improved locking devices whereby certain important advantages are attained, and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use all as will be here inafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In order that my improvements may be the better understood, I will'now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1, is a fragmentary view in front elevation of a window structure with a locking device constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, is asectional view taken on the line Ma of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a sectional view, looking in the direction of the arrow, taken on the line b-b of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, 1s a fragmentary view in perspective of a portion of my invention as disclosed in Fig. 1.
In-these views 1, denotes a window frame of the usual construction having mounted therein the upper sash 2 and the lower sash 3 adapted, as usual, for relative sliding movement within the frame 1.
In order to control the relative movement of the upper sash 2 and the lower sash 3 I herein show aflixed to a side rail 4 of the Specification of Letters Patent.

upper sash 2, a locking device constructed in accordance with my invention and as hereinshown such locking device comprises a Hat elongated member 5 formed of suitable material, preferably sheet steel, adapted to be secured to the side piece 4, as indicated at 6, in any desired manner such as by screws or the like. The elongated body member 5 has one longitudinal edge portion 7 bent back upon itself as is particularly shown in detail Fig. 4 and the heel 8 of such bent back portion 7 is so formed as to produce a tubular member 13 through which is adapted to be passed the elongated pintle 9, the extremities 10 of such pintle being curved or olfset to prevent the accidental displacement of such pintle from operative position, as is believed to be clearly shown in Fig. 1. I wish to state, however, that any other means may be employed in lieu of the curved or offset extremities 10 that will operate with equal facility. At predetermined points the bent back portion 7 of the body member 5 is cut away, as indicated at 14 whereby portions of the pint-1e 9 are free to be swingingly engaged by the locking wings or leaves 12 such wings or leaves, as herein disclosed, being capable of a movement in a direction substantially laterally of the body member 5 and when in a position angular to the plane in which travels the lower sash 3 it is believed to be clearly apparent that the relative movement of the sashes 2 and 3 will be controlled or limited as the upper or meeting rail 15 of the lower sash 2 will contact with such ext-ended leaf or wing. In the drawings the lowermost wing or leaf 12 is shown extended whereby it is believed to be obvious that both of the sashes 2 and 3 are effectually held against any substantial movement. If, however, it should be desired to raise or lower the lower sash a predetermined distance or to raise or lower the upper sash a suitable distance, such movement-s will be controlled or limited by extending any one of the wings or leaves 12 above the lower wing or leaf.
In order to obtain the greatest efliciency it is best that the wing 12 extended into locking position be located in a direction perpendicular to the elongated body portion 5 and in order to prevent the wing from passing beyond such direction I have afiixed on the upper surface of the meeting rail 15 of the lower sash 3 a stop 16 herein shown as comprising a main portion 18 suitably seupon the leaf and having its heel portion tubular in cross section to swingingly or hingedly engage the pint-1e 9 as is believed to be obvious in the drawings. The upper end of the tubular portion 20 forms a stop for shoulder 21 on which is adapted to rest,
when the wing 12 is in operated or extended position, the locking device 22, such looking device 22 being capable of operation to hold such wing 12 against return move- 'ment or from moving into folded position against the elongated member 5. This looking device 22 comprises, as herein shown, a lever member 23 produced from flat elongated material being so bent, as at 24, to
i produce a tubular member to afford a pivotal engagement with the pintle 9 and having an end portion bent back and forward upon itself, as at 2, to produce an obstruction adapted when such obstruction is in contact with the shoulder 21 to engage with the adjacent face of the wing or leaf 12 and thereby effectually hold the same against return movement or into folded position.
In order that the obstruction 25 may be readily and quickly placed into operative position or caused to assume inoperative position it is to be observed that each of the cut-away portions 14 is of such size as to readily permit movement of the lockmg der the upper edge of the leaf 12 holding the upper device 22 inoperative. As soon as the leaf or wing 12 is swung forward the look ing device 22 or more particularly the obstruction 25 thereof will drop by gravity into contact or engagement with the shoul- 'der '21 whereby it will be readily understood that the locking of the wing or leaf 12 is substantially automatic.
From the foregoing description of my improvements, it will be seen that the improved locking device constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and efficiency of its operation and it will also be obvious from the above description that the choice is susceptible of considerable modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention and for this reason I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise formation and arrangement of the several parts as herein set forth in carrying my invention into practice.
Having thus described my invention what I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
l. A device of the character described comprising a body member, one marginal portion of such member being cut away, apintle carried by the body member intersecting the cut away portion thereof, a device pivotally engaging the pintle at the cut away portion of the body member and a locking member pivotally engaging the pintle and capable of engagement with the device to hold the same against movement in one direction.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body member, one marginal portion of such member being cut away, a pintle carried by the body member intersecting the cut away portion thereof, a device pivotally engaging the pintle at the cut away portion of the body member and a locking member pivotally engaging the pintle and capable of engagement with the device to hold the same against movement in one direction, said locking member being also capable of movement longitudinally of the pintle.
3. A device of the character described comprising a body member, one marginal portion of such member being cut away, a pintle carried by the body member intersecting the cut away portion thereof, a device pivotally engaging the pintle at the cut away portion of the body member, said device being provided with a shoulder to afford a stop and a locking member pivotally held by the pintle and capable of movement longitudinally thereof, adapted to engage the stop of the device when the same is in extended position with relation to the body member whereby such device is held against movement in one direction.
