Description

J. KUEHL.
PLOW ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED mm. 16, 1912.
Patented Dec. 10, 1912.
JOHN KUEHL, OF CLINTONVILLE, WISCONSIN.
PLOW ATTACHMENT.
Application filed March 16, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN KUnrIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olintonville, in the county of lVaupaca and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invent-ion relates to draft appliances, and it more particularly relates to an im proved draft appliance to be used in connection with plows or the like.
An object of the invent-ion is to provide certain improvements of this character, whereby the lateral and vertical draft of a plow may be quickly and easily regulated, thereby eliminating the necessity for the usual front wheel, for a similar purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which, while thoroughly practical and efficient in operation, is comparatively economical from the point of manufacture and maintenance.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more clearly set forth and pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, the figure illustrates a plow of ordinary construction having my improved form of draft appliance secured thereto.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, the plow is provided with the usual draft beam 6 and handles 7. A draw rod 8 is provided, at its forward end, with an eye 9 and thereby adapted for engagement with any proper form of draft medium (not shown). The draw rod is also provided with a hook 5 which engages with a loop 4, the latter being secured to the beam 6 by means of a bolt 3. In this construction the draft beam may be of wood or of any proper material; and, with a wooden beam, I may employ a frame or cap 10. This frame may either be made from cast-iron or it may be forged from wrought-iron, and is secured to the beam 6 by means of bolts 11. This cap is provided with an aperture 12 in which is movably seated a jointed adjusting Specification of Letters Patent.

bar, consisting of an upper section 13 and a lower section 14, the latter being apertured for the reception of the draw-rod 8. The forward end of the cap 10 is apertured and screw-threaded for the reception of the setscrew 16, which is adapted to contact with the forward surface of the member 13 for holding it in its alternative adjusted positions. On the lower end of the member 13 is formed a series of radial ribs 17 and intervening notches 18, while a similar series of radial ribs and notches are formed on the upper end of the member 14. A bolt or stud 19 coacts with a nut 20, for holding the members 13 and 14 in their alternative adjusted positions. By means of the handle 21, the nut 20 may be loosened or tightened on the stud 19, and when loosened, the member 14 may be swung about the stud 19, thereby carrying the draw-rod 8 laterally of the plow beam 6. Obviously, by continuing the lateral movement of the draw-rod, this movement changes to a vertical movement; that is, the draw-rod 8 is caused to move laterally through an arc of'a circle. thereby moving both horizontally and vertically. It is obvious that by again tightening the nut 20, while the member 14 and the rod 8 are in the desired position of adjustment, the radial ribs of the member 13 will be seated between the radial ribs of the member 14, thereby securely retaining the elements 8 and 14 in adjusted position. Further adjustment, in a vertical direction, may be obtained by loosening the screw 16, sliding the bar 18 up or down in the aperture 12 and again tightening the screw 16.
It is obvious that by the structure disclosed, the depth and width of the furrow may be properly regulated.
I do not limit my invention to the exact details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herewith disclosed; but my invention may only be limited by a reasonable interpretation of the following claim.
What I claim is:
In combination with a plow beam, an apertured member embracing the end of said beam, a draw rod having an end secured to said beam, a jointed adjusting bar extending vertically through said apertured member and adapted for vertical adjust- In testimony whereof I have signed my ment therein, the lower end of said jointed name to this specification in the presence of adjusting bar supporting the forward end two subscribing Witnesses.
of the draw-rod, and means associated With JOHN KUEHL. 5 the jointed adjusting bar whereby the joint Witnesses:
thereof may be clamped in one of several LLEWELLYN COLE,
adjusted positions for the purpose specified. MAY MOLDENBAUER.
